Grading

I’ve tried using the grade calculator to calculate my BTEC business grade but it doesn’t allow me to input my individual grades for each unit. But what would my grade be if I got a merit in this unit and then all Distinctions in my year 2 units. What would my final grade be? Let’s say I get all distinctions apart from 2 merits what would my grade be then? I would like to achieve a D*D*D as my final grade would that still be possible?

Which BTEC qualification are you doing? The Extended Diploma?

Different units are different sizes, meaning they attract different points, and so have a different impact on your overall grade. As a result, your question can't be answered without knowing in which units you got a merit and in which units you got a distinction.

Yes it’s the Extended Diploma. So if I get merits in the exam units and the rest Distinctions

With BTECs you get points per unit (depending on the size of the unit and the grade you achieve), which they then total and convert into an overall grade. For a D*D*D you need a total of 252 points (see page 354 of the specification).

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Business has four external (exam-based) units, three of which are 120 GLH (guided learning hours) and one of which is 90 GLH. The three 120 GLH units earn you at least 20 points each for a Merit, whilst the 90 GLH unit earns you at least 15 points. I say "at least" because it depends on the mark you get. The higher your mark - even if it's not enough for a Distinction - the more points you get. For for these four units, a Merit in each would earn you 20 + 20 + 20 + 15 = 75 points.

The three mandatory internal (coursework-based) units are each 90 GLH, and will earn you 24 points each for a Distinction - i.e. 3 x 24 = 72 points in total.

The remaining six internal (coursework-based) units are each 60 GLH, and will earn you 16 points each for a Distinction - i.e. 6 x 16 = 96 points in total.

So, in this scenario, you'd be at 75 + 72 + 96 = 243 points. Enough for a D*DD, which needs 234 points, but not quite enough for a D*D*D, which needs 252 points. However, as I said above, you get more points in the exams for higher marks (even if you don't move up to the next grade). So that could well be enough to gain you the additional 9 points to hit D*D*D.

If I get higher marks in the exam units I could get D*D*D?

Yes.

The external units earn you points on a sliding scale. If your marks are enough to just hit the Merit grand boundary in a 120 GLH unit, you get 20 points, and if your marks are just enough to hit the Distinction boundary in the same unit, you get 32 points. However, if your score is midway between the two boundaries you get 26 points (the midpoint between 20 points and 32 points). If your score is 1/4 of the way between the Merit boundary and the Distinction boundary, then you get 23 points (1/4 of the way from 20 to 32). So the more marks you get the more points you get - on a sliding scale.

In the scenario in the post above, you were just 9 points short of a D*D*D. Gaining a mark which is 1/4 of the way between the Merit and Distinction boundary in each of the 120 GLH external (exam-based) units would gain you those 9 extra points.
