Most universities work on 120 credits per year, although some (e.g. Bath) use ECTS credits for which a full year in 60 credits.

Your university may let you progress to the next year without all 120 credits - but it depends on how many credits you failed, what mark you got for each failed module, whether the modules were "core" or "option" modules, and sometimes other factors. Most importantly it depends on what uni you're at, as they all have different rules and regulations.

(Also, given that you've posted this in the "Introduce yourself" forum, welcome to TSR!)

Thanks. According to their web site, some Social Work BA modules in Year 1 are worth 15 credits and some are worth 30 credits. How many credits is each of those two modules worth?

If you scroll down to the "What you will study" section of this Social Work BA Hons page you'll see a list of modules in each year, and how many credits each is worth.

For example, Academic and Personal Development is 15 credits, whilst Introduction to Social Work is worth 30 credits.

That's great news. In that case, you can almost certainly take advantage of "Compensation" detailed in D5.9 though D5.15 of Greenwich's Academic Regulations for Taught Awards from 2023-24 (PDF).

Compensation is where they turn a "blind eye" to a failure if the credits are low enough and the marks are high enough - i.e. they award you the credits for those modules as if you'd passed them.

The key paragraph (which details most of the criteria) is this one:

"D5.11 In consideration of a student’s profile, the Progression and Award Board will apply compensation up to a maximum of 30 credits per stage of study where all the following apply:
the work has been marked using a numerical scale (e.g. is not a pass/fail module).
the overall module grade is no more than 10% below the minimum module pass mark.
an average grade of the relevant pass mark has been achieved in all other modules which have been completed at the point at which the student is considered at a PAB.
the credit to be compensated is NOT the dissertation or major project piece of
assessment."

From what you've written above, those criteria all apply.

The only potential issue is this:

"D5.14 Programme specifications may identify particular modules to which compensation may not be applied."

The programme specification is not available publicly, so I can't confirm that this doesn't apply to either of your two modules. I suggest you contact the course lead, or similar, to check that.
