Biochemistry/ biomedical work experience

I’m applying for biochemistry in Jan 2025 and not sure what to do for work experience. Any suggestions?

Another option that I’m also looking into is biomedical sciences, so any suggestions on work experience for this too would also be appreciated
Any lab experience would be valued due to the transferable skills and it shows you are willing to put the time and effort in

Hi @itired

I'm a third year biochemist at Lancaster, so hopefully can give some relevant advice!

Honestly, don't stress about getting lab-based experience if you think it'll be difficult for you to source (although, if you have a family friend in the sector, or attend a talk from someone at your local university who may offer you shadowing - amazing opportunity). Universities don't expect lab experience outside of normal school labs as they recognise it's difficult to get pre-university, so lacking it won't affect your application.

The most important thing is to show an interest in the subject. This can be through further reading of articles, science magazines, or MOOCs. You can also join/start extra-curricular activities at your college/sixth form. I attended dissection club (although as a biochemist it wasn't really my favourite area) and I also helped led a science discussion club where we arranged for teachers/visitors to talk, or one of the students involved prepared a discussion around an article - which was great! Also, other students applying for similar subjects might be interested in helping you set up a science discussion society, as it'll help them with their personal statement too!

When adding in experience, it's key to highlight what you learnt from it and how that applies to your degree.

I hope I could help, good luck with your applications!
