Student loan approved but more evidence?

Hi

I am a parent supporting finance application. I sent all details in May. Last week eldest received letter approving max amount with payment schedule included. 3 days later I receive a letter asking for proof of child benefit for 2023/23. I ring and ask and they tell me my NI number is "unmatched". I have checked all submitted details against HMRC app and it's all correct. I point this out to SFE and they still want the evidence even though it's identical details, and then tell me that I will need to sort it out with HMRC if it's still unmatched. But surely that's their problem to sort? I have these questions please...

How has my son received approved loan letter before the letter asking me for more evidence?

Does this mean that he won't actually get the approved loan amount?

If this is the case, why does the letter say approved?

Is it actually my problem to sort re unmatched NI number when it's clearly correct?

Thanks... very confused and frustrated with the entire process.
Hi Claret21,

It shouldn't be the case that we can approve a student's income assessed application if the sponsor's National Insurance number is unmatched. You will need to send us evidence of your national Insurance number if the number you have entered does not match DWP records.

Thanks,
Calum

So he has had a loan approved letter. As I said my NI number matches my hmrc record and my employer.
Hi Claret21,

You were asked for evidence of your National Insurance number, is this correct?

Only after he received the loan approved letter.

Only after he received the loan approved letter.

Hi Clare,

We can award the basic finance which doesn't take the parents income into account. This will be why he got letter if we're asking you for evidence of your national insurance. Once you have sent this, we can look to reassess the student for the higher finance using your income.

Thanks,
Claire

The letter stayed he would get maximum loan.

But why would he already have received the maximum loan approved letter if you need more evidence? It makes no sense. I submitted my details in may and have not been asked for further evidence until after he has received the loan approved letter saying he is eligible for maximum loan amount.

The student would be best to contact us so we can check this for him. He can use the live chat option on his online account.

We spoke to them last night but no answers at all. That's why I'm here.

The student can see if his loan has been assessed on the household income or not if he calls. We don't have account access over social media for security so can't confirm if he's getting maximum based on your income or not.

Claire
