data science personal statement

Hi everyone!

I’m currently working on my personal statement for data science and need some advice. I’m deciding whether to focus primarily on my data science experiences or if it’s important to include details about my background in math and programming.

Here’s a summary of what I’ve drafted so far:

Introduction to Data and Mathematics: I mention how an early fascination sparked my interest in data and made math my favorite subject.
Physics: I’ve included a brief paragraph on how studying physics further developed my analytical skills.
Programming Journey: I cover my programming knowledge gained through various courses and practical experiences in databases and logic.
Competitions and Achievements: I describe my participation in competitions that enhanced my technical skills and teamwork.
I’m planning to add a section on my work experience and conclude with my extracurricular activities. Do you think the background in math and programming is necessary, or should I focus more on my data science experiences?

Thanks!

Universities love to see applicants having a connection with the world beyond them, especially jobs or work experience. If you can explain what you learnt from those experiences and why it’s made you want to study Data Science at uni, then experience is definitely more important.
