Tablet or Laptop for biological sciences? Already have a PC.

I'm starting a biological sciences course in September and was considering buying a tablet primarily for note taking since I prefer handwriting to typing. However I know there may be a few programs which require a decent amount of power, I do have a PC which is reasonably powerful already. Would I need the portability and power laptops offer or could I just go ahead and use a tablet and a PC?

Hi @09V,

Congratulations on getting onto a biological sciences course this year! I did a BSc in Zoology and am now doing a Masters so I have some experience that may help, however it will be based on my knowledge from the University of Southampton so just be mindful of that.

For me first year was going over some of the more basic/general biology topics and getting everyone to a similar level of knowledge. If you prefer handwriting I knew a lot of people who used tablets to annotate PowerPoints in these lectures which worked very well. We did some lab work and therefore wrote a few reports which would be easier to type but could be done on your PC or on library computers.

Once you move into later years there may be programs that need to be downloaded on a higher power device but again this could be on your PC or university computers. At the University of Southampton you can borrow laptops if you need one for a short time or a specific assignment.

Overall, if you think handwriting will be better for you I think it should be fine on its own for at least your first year and would definitely still be helpful in later years potentially alongside a laptop.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions I would advise speaking to the specific university of your course directly.

Abby,
4th year UoS student.
