fatsoma freshers events and freshers wristbands

hi i’m in y13 and am (hopefully) going to uni in september. this isn’t a specific uni question but rather a general one about freshers week. i’ve been on some of the uni group chats for a while (although haven’t been that active on some of them) and i keep getting fatsoma links as well as other links to do with freshers club events. i’ve seen online that people get them and get to university and realise that most people aren’t actually on these chats and haven’t gotten these ”freshers club tickets” and either go and it’s dead or don’t go because no one else is going so it’s a waste. something feels weird about it to me which is why i haven’t gotten a ticket yet… but people keep messaging me saying that “xyz and i are going clubbing in september would you want to buy this ticket to come with us” is this like a known scam? and some of these people on these chats i’m in have seem to have bought them so i’m really not sure.
now another thing. official university freshers events! i’m thinking of getting a wristband but lots of people say this is a huge waste as you won’t go to everything and you can pay at the door? however idk if it’s more expensive to pay at the door instead of just the wristband but if it’s a huge huge waste i don’t want to get a wristband. any previous freshers to offer advice is appreciated i’m just trying to not overspend xxx

Yes it’s a known scam

The people messaging you aren’t freshers. They’re probably not even students. They’re pressure selling.

Report their messages as spam to whatsapp/insta

Follow your university student union social media accounts for genuine events that actually do sell out.

Find genuine course mates/flat mates for your university (ask about what courses people are taking, where else they applied, where they are going to be living, what clubs and societies they want to join, what they are buying/decorating their room with etc etc and be wary of anyone sharing links to ticket sites - they’re probably lying about everything). They are probably in the group chats and also being pressured.

You’ll make your best friends after freshers and probably through chance meetings that you least expect.
Be open to new experiences and talk to people who look a bit lost or lonely (even if you’re already with a group of people you can still invite other people to join the group).

Oh and bring painkillers, rehydrating drinks, vitamins and sleeping pills to help keep your energy and health up.

@hiabsotd -

Huge congrats on getting your uni offers! 3 top tips from me are...

1.

Only buy a wristband if you're planning on going to a good number of the paid-for events on campus - at Bath these were only the concerts in the evenings. There will be a ton more events by societies, clubs and your course which are free, so you won't miss out if you don't have a wristband. If you only plan on going to a handful of paid events it might be better value to pay on the door.

2.

Bring brownies. And put them on your accommodation's kitchen surface to share with your new flatmates. Its a great ice breaker and convo starter!

3.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself. You're in a brand new place and a totally new environment. Give yourself time to find your way around, explore the campus, the town, meet a few of your lecturers. Its always good to try to connect with people, and I think you'll find it easier than expected as you're all in the same boat! But there will be tons of opportunities post freshers and throughout your degree to meet friends. I only met my real friends when we got into doing group project work in our second year.

I hope that helps, best of luck and have fun in freshers week!

Yes well known scam, ad very hard to clamp down on.

Often the whatsapp/ig/snap/fb messenger chats are actually started by fake students who act the part stir the pot and build a group chat, then they will tactically place in fake / unofficial events designed to scam new students who are excited, don’t want to miss out.

The best thing to do is only buy official events beforehand (directly from your students union), this will be the place where the vast majority of the “freshers” / first year students go to each night. The universities often also put in place security & have well-being stuff in place so people don’t get lost in a random new city late at night...
