Can you apply to summer internships whilst on a year out DURING uni? (comp science)

Hi there,
I finished my second year of computer science and I deferred my exams next year due to mental health so I will not progress to third year until I complete and pass these, that means I will not be going to uni for a year, I will not be attending any lectures/classes just taking the exams. I am hoping to get some experience this year. I got a first in first year but this doesn't count towards the final grade.

I want to apply to spring insights and summer internships for software engineering, will I be allowed to or do you have to be an actual student currently attending university?

I don't see why not. Apply and find out. Worst case scenario you'll get some good experience on applying for jobs and potentially going through interviews which will help you in the future. You also don't need to disclose your particular situation to the employers, if asked just refer to when you're expected to graduate.
Since you are going to be off of Uni for the year you might even want to do a 12 month placement. Although it's already August so you may struggle with finding places to work at, or were you talking about the summer of 2025? If so then that shouldn't be an issue.
