Does your course include a placement year or internship opportunities? This is the best way to get some work experience on your CV for when you graduate.

Try and speak to the final year kids who have done their placement year and find out who got the best experience and was properly mentored as opposed to just left to their own devices. Ask the lecturers and YII coordinator about the different types of company you could do the YII with and try to figure out which type you are most interested in (e.g, contractor/private practice/owner). Also figure out if you want to go into building/civils or engineering. Try and get a summer placement after year 1, that might get you ahead of the competition in getting the best YII job. Also, don't worry about the salary for the YII, getting a good placement with proper experience/mentoring will stand you in better stead when you go for interviews at the end of your degree. If they have visiting lecturers from industry ask them what they are looking for in fresh graduates and don't be shy to ask lots of questions about the industry. PM me some time if you want any specific advice, I am 30 year QS veteran. Good luck!
