help what highers do i take

I'm going into S5 and I know I'm definitely taking English, Modern Studies and Geography.

However I am stuck between taking Maths or crashing RMPS. I got an A in N5 maths, however when timetable changed I found Higher maths extremely challenging and I am unsure whether I should do a subject like Maths with the chance of getting a lower grade in a subject like RMPS, which I will have to put less effort into to get a good grade.

I am also stuck between taking higher Human bio, Art and Spanish. For N5 I got an B for biology, and A's for spanish and art. Ip unsure if art would be useful as I know I want to go to UNi but not to do art. If anyone has any opinions on their experiences of taking these subjects it would be appreciated.

tbh Higher maths is just practice, the more you practice the more you see the pattern of the style of questions that are similar or basically the same, i literally done so bad on my first test but for my final exam i done quite okay- oh yeah does your school not offer higher biology?

Hey @deceptacon 🙂 Do you know what type of course you might be interested in at uni yet? It sounds like you're going down more of a Humanities/essay based route and not a STEM one, so you might not need the Higher Maths in terms of entry requirements for uni.

It could be good to challenge yourself with the Higher Maths and diversify your subject choices a little bit, but you're right that if you're already not loving it then maybe your outcome wouldn't be what you would like. Did you enjoy the Nat 5? Is it worth maybe speaking to your teachers when you're back and asking them how long you have to change? Sometimes they'll give you a week or so to stay in the class and see how it feels and you might settle in to it after a while.

If you want to keep your options as open as possible, having a science and maths is a good idea. RMPS showcases a similar set of skills to English, Modern, and Geography, so is less likely to add to your uni application.

Spanish could also be useful, so an alternative would be to pick that and Biology and maybe do maths in S6 once you have a solid set of results in the bag.

Have a look at unis and entry requirements, most only specify grades for your top four highers, so if one grade is a bit lower that should be fine, but if you are going for a course that routinely asks for five As you might be better going for a safer set.

Yesss I really enjoyed N5 maths and have always really enjoyed doing maths, even considered doing it at uni at one point. I think higher just stumbled me, we can change subjects when we go back but we have a day this week where we can go into school and change our subject choices- which I would prefer doing. I completely agree with the diversifying my subject choices point, considering I'm not 100% on what I wanna do at uni.

They only offer higher human biology which I don't mind because I would prefer that to biology.

yess i went to school and switched back to maths for that reason. I’m still stuck between higher spanish and art. My guidance teacher showed me my results and I got a B4 for biology but for spanish i got 30/30 speaking, 27/30 listening, 12/15 writing assignment , 23/30 reading and 9/15 writing. For art I got 37/50 written exam, 80/100 design folio and 99/100 expressive folio. Honestly so stuck considering I’m better at Art but I feel as though spanish would be more useful for going to uni (also considering I don’t want to do art at uni).

apologies for the late replies, just logged on there and saw this. Honestly in S4 I very much went between art and spanish. I enjoyed speaking the most in spanish however apart from that I just found the subject boring and didnt feel interested in it, although I could do it to a good standard considering I barely studied for it. With art on the other hand I have always had a natural ability for expressive and critical, however design is more challenging for me and I find it frustraiting and I honestly hate it.

I feel as though art is more time consuming but the thing with spanish is it takes alot more thought and processing time (I have slow proccessing speed and dyslexia- however when I got my dyslexia assessment results back I scored well above average in processing spoken words and phonemes, meaning I may have an aptitude for learning foreign languages)
