Year abroad Heriot Watt

Hi all 👋 I’m starting the Spanish and French translating and interpreting degree at HW next month and I was just wondering if anyone could give me any info about placement abroad stuff in the 3rd year? I can’t find out much about it. I was hoping I could go to Spain (Spanish is my ‘main’ language) and possibly take my daughter who will be 11 then. I keep seeing stuff about HW’s partner unis but I can’t seem to find out which ones they actually are in Spain. I would be really interested to hear from anyone who’s had the experience of going to Spain in the 3rd year  muchas gracias ☺️ char

Hello! Thank you so much for your question

I study BSL at Heriot Watt and just about to go on my placement year! Things work slightly differently for my course, but lots of my friends are doing similar courses to you and are going through the process at the mo.

Your year abroad is an incredible opportunity to develop language skills, create friends and immerse yourself with different cultures. Typically students do two separate placements at HWU's partner unis, for example one semester in Spain and the second semester in France. However, this is subject to personal circumstances whether you do one or two placements.

The uni will provide you with a list of partner universities in many different countries, and from there you select your top choices. There are frequent 'year abroad meetings' which help to make the process smooth for everybody. The uni will contact the placements and will get in contact once everything is confirmed. You will choose which modules you would like to study and then prepare for transport and visas! The process can seem daunting, but there are lots of people there to support you, including your course mates, lecturers and personal tutor.

Some of our partner unis in Spain are found here: European exchange - Heriot-Watt University (hw.ac.uk)

Hope this helps! All the best
