Southampton CS foundation year or Bristol Data Science?

I think I’ll miss my firm Southampton offer for normal CS integrated masters with AI by a grade but its close to home and affordable so thinking of clearing for foundation year? At bristol my insurance it is 4 hours away and if i get an accommodation after not having accom guarantee it will be very expensive as Im on minimum loan and so I’ll be working a lot. Thoughts ?
Have you asked Southampton if they can consider you for a foundation if they aren’t able to accept you? A course change at your firm wouldn’t normally require clearing.

Last I checked though the Southampton FYs were for students without the right subjects not for students who missed their grades though - so it might not be a viable option.
Yep. https://www.southampton.ac.uk/courses/foundation-years/engineering-physics-maths-geophysics.page#%0A______entry_requirements%0A_____
If you have the A level subjects for a year 1 offer then you aren’t suitable for the FY option at Southampton. It’s for applicants who haven’t take maths/science A levels not for applicants with lower grades

It says I can still apply to it and progress to first year so long as i have done A Level maths which I have so surely I can still do it

"Applicants who are taking all the A-level or equivalent subjects required for entry to their chosen degree, will not normally be offered a place on our Foundation Year" they then list the required subjects. So if you have the subjects at A level listed in the table then you would NOT be considered for FY

I would not assume that to be true.

Also I would not assume the foundation year course will even be in clearing. The eng/maths/CS foundation year as I understood was pretty well subscribed when I was there (whereas the science foundation year was not so much - note that the science foundation year would NOT be adequate preparation for the courses that the eng/maths/CS foundation year progress to).

Hi @fakeaccount145 ,

I'm Joshua, a 3rd year CompSci student here at Southampton 🙂

Like the others have said, unfortunately the clearing spaces for the foundation year are typically for those who don't already study the required A levels, and there are currently no clearing spaces for the ordinary degree without the FY.

However, I would still contact the admissions team themselves to double check about applying to the FY clearing spot, as they might be able to allow it!

Due to the UCAS results embargo, the admissions team and anyone at the uni will not be able to confirm or deny anything about your offer until it is results day when the embargo is lifted.

Clearing hotline: +44(0)3300 586940
Admissions for the faculty: +44 (0)23 8059 4732

It might still be possible that you reach your offer, I hope you get the grades needed🤞

All the best,

Hi everyone

How difficult is the Foundation in engineering course? If anyone fail what’s the chance for them to get into Year1 of the uni course? Do they allow them to resit?

Hi there,

I can't comment on the difficulty personally as I haven't been through the course myself. However, most foundation courses are aimed to be accessible for all students and so aren't too difficult.

About the failing the year, I found this in the course description:
"If you do not achieve the pass mark in up to two modules, but you maintain an overall aggregate of 50% or above, you will be required to retake the assessment for the failed papers. This is known as “referral”.

If you fail to achieve the pass mark in more than two modules, or achieve an overall aggregate of less than 50% you will be required to retake the assessment for all the modules (including any modules where you achieved the pass mark or above). This is known as a resit

You will only be allowed one attempt to resit the Foundation Year."

You can view the course description document here for more information.

Hope this helps!
