UCL firm

I firmed UCL for econ and stats and my entry requirements were A*(in maths)AA. I got my results yesterday and unfortunately got AABB (B in maths). However, my ucas has not updated as it just says “UCL is yet to make a decision“, does this mean that UCL is still considering me? I’m kinda desperate for a response as I can’t get into my insurance until UCL has confirmed a rejection.

My teachers have suggested that I appeal my results and I plan to do so but I’m still waiting for a response from UCL before I contact them regarding appeals.

Yes, it means they're still considering you. You're a "near miss" candidate, and such candidates sometimes get accepted - depending on how many (if any) places are available on the course once they've confirmed the place of all offer-holders who met their offer grades.

I suspect UCL are waiting until they've processed all the A level results which they'll receive between now and 15th August. If you don't want to wait that long, and would rather just go to your insurance (assuming your AABB meets their offer conditions) then you'll need to contact UCL and ask them to reject you.

By the way, why are you waiting for a response from UCL before deciding whether or not to try to get you're grades bumped up? Wouldn't you want to kick that process off sooner rather than later?

My exam board is the SQA and I have submitted for a priority appeal through my school. However, SQA says that priority appeals will be notified of any result changes by the 2nd September which to my knowledge is after the UCAS deadline for uni confirmation (31st August). I worry that UCL reject me after a change of scores and I run the risk of not getting into my insurance either (unconditional offer from Edinburgh). I emailed UCL on results day out of desperation asking to be reconsidered without mentioning appeals and they have replied saying that if I appeal I should let them know of a result change, does this mean I should only contact them after I get the results from my appeal?

If you're having your marks reviewed, UCAS advise that universities hold your potential place until 4 September, although this particular date is not mandatory. Have UCL told you by when they need to receive your updated results? If they stick with the UCAS-recommended date, then you should have news from SQA in time.

Have you contacted your insurance uni too, to let them know what's happening? It's always best to keep everyone in the loop so there are no surprises. Your insurance offer is not in jeopardy.

These dates make more sense, thank you. Would it be better to contact Edinburgh after A level results day if I receive any update from UCL and UCAS?

The only issue is that I am only guaranteed accommodation at Edinburgh if I become unconditional firm by the 31 August and if I get rejected from UCL early sept I might miss out on accommodation.

I am reluctant to ask UCL to reject me as it is still my first choice

I think that makes sense. UCL might confirm your place on A level results day anyway, depending how their other A level candidates have done. Or they might not, and will await the results of your review of marking. Equally, they might have so many A level candidates who meet their offer, that they know they won't have any space left for "near miss" candidates.

The fact that your Edinburgh accomodation guarantee means you need need to be unconditional by 31 August makes things tricky, timing-wise.

You don't need to do anything right now. Things might become clearer on Thursday. If not, then hopefully you'll get the results of the review of marking back in time (if UCL are still in the frame).

If you don't, then you have a decision to make. Keep hanging on to the hope of a getting a grade uplift allowing into UCL, but risking the Edinburgh accomodation, or letting UCL go in order to secure that accomodation.
