SFE - taking out a tuition fee loan for another degree after dropping out of uni.

Hiya, I'm a mature student and considering going back into education after 6 years. I studied Modern Languages at university but dropped out in my final year (4 year course) due to mental health and other personal reasons. I did manage to get a DipHE but it was unspecified so it counts for nothing.

My question is, if I wanted to go back to university to study a health profession, would Student Finance approve another tuition fee loan for 3 years? Or would I have to fund the first year/the whole course myself?

At the moment I am thinking of applying to Adult Nursing or Dental Hygiene and Therapy.

I am planning on taking an Access to Higher Education Course in the meantime and hopefully apply for 2025 entry at Portsmouth University. But I just wanted to clarify if I would be able to take out another loan before putting my hopes up.

Has anyone else done this before? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for reading 😊

Hi there. Nursing and Dental Hygiene and Therapy are usually exempt from previous study rules. We would not take your previous study into account. So, you could receive full funding for the course.

W can check the course to see what funding it attracts. Can you confirm the full name of the new course and university? Will the new course be full time or part time? How many years will it be? When does the new course start? Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah, thank you for your reply.
The courses I am currently looking at are:

BN (Hons) Adult Nursing (B740), 3 years full-time,
BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy (B750), 3 years full-time.

At the moment, I am hoping to apply to Portsmouth University.

Many thanks

Hi there. Yes, both of these courses are exceptions, therefore we would not take your previous study into account and you could receive full funding for the course.

Please note, this is general advice and you need to make an application for us to determine your eligibility for the loan. Thanks, Leah.
