CDD at A levels

I’m fine now on track for a first at Teesside university for chemical engineering and have a placement year. However I still have my a levels as CDD and it’s still scaring me that it will affect my career when I have state my a levels. Will it affect me in the future??

It's unlikely to. There are some sectors where you hear of employers specifically asking for candidates' A level grades (Law and Finance come to mind), but Chemical Engineering isn't one of them.

The fact that you have a placement year makes it even less likely to be an issue, as you've got that experience behind you.

Remember, your CV is your document. You choose what to include and what to omit. If you want to just list your A level subjects, and not the grades, that's fine. They're likely to me more focused on your degree classification (and possibly your module results) anyway.

What about a course like CS?

Same. A level grades are unlikely to be an issue once you have your degree.

This is what I thought, but I was looking at criteria for securing certain internships and they say that you need to have achieved at least A*AA, in addition to other things (having achieved at least a 7 in English Language and Maths, On track to receive at least a 2:1 at university).

I've not started uni yet, but I was just curious so I thought I'd take a look.

I guess they have other things to look at once you've graduated so don't really look too much at A levels after uni.

Thanks!

Most employers don’t ask about A-level grades. Ultimately your career trajectory will be based on what you bring to the table not about what qualifications you have.

There are a very small number of graduate jobs/internships that look at A-levels, they used to be investment banking, management consultancy & corporate law.

Although in the last ten years many of the companies in these fields have moved away from A-levels (as A-level performance is often more a reflection of school/socioeconomics/resources and is not a good comparable), so now id say it’s more “boutique” & small employers working in the same sectors I listed above.

It’s still standard practice to require a 2.1 degree & also to filter candidates using online screening tests (including situational judgment, values, potentially some communication & maths tests) instead.

Hi,

It's great to hear you’re studying Chemical Engineering with us and are on track for a 1st 😀

A-level grades are unlikely to be an issue once you have your degree. Employers tend to look at your most recent qualifications as a guide to how you’re doing. They will take other things into account too such as your experience so your placement year will look great!

It's not essential to list your grades on your CV, but it can be helpful, particularly if you're applying for jobs with specific grade requirements. Check this first.

Don’t forget you have access to Student Futures. Our expert advisers are here to help you with all aspects of your career, including writing your CV and interview prep. You can book an appointment here tees.ac.uk/studentfutures.
