Taking a gap year worth it

So results day didn’t go as planned for me, I didn’t meet the conditions for my firm offer. I have two options take a gap year and reapply or do my insurance offer and hopefully transfer over to my desired course.

Taking a gap year sounds so scary to me, I know that it may be the better option but I’m scared that I’ll be behind or not get an offer this time. My plans for the gap year are to do an HNC in applied science and resit higher physics and also continue with volunteering. Has anyone been in a similar boat to me? Or offer me any advice about taking a gap year? Or am I better just trying to transfer courses?
Have you spoken to your insurance university about the possibility of transferring.

Generally it’s a bad idea to start a degree unless you plan to complete that degree - relying on the possibility of a transfer is highly risky. However depending on the course and the university then sometimes transferring is possible. Where that’s the case then a university will be able to explain the details and how it would work before you take up a place.

'transfer over to my desired course' - at the same Uni or a different Uni?

As above, if its the same Uni, ask now (why didnt you apply for that course?).

If its at a different Uni, PQ's advice is spot on - its a silly tactic to start any degree in the hope that you can switch Unis later because you may get 'stuck' at the other Uni, never engage in the degree properly, make friends etc, and generally not enjoy being there.

If you don't get the subject/course etc that you want this year, my advice would also be to forget this year and put in an entirely new application in the autumn for 2025 entry with 5 new, thought out, choices.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply!

I’m only considering the transferring option as on the Unis website it states that they consider year 3 entry onto the desired course if you successfully complete 3 years of this course. I’m not sure if this will be available in the future.

Does this change anything?
