UWE Bristol

Hello, I got an offer from UWE Bristol to study aerospace engineering and I saw It's ranked 10th in aerospace engineering in the UK, So i was wondering what its lacking for it to be ranked lower than other universities like University of Bristol.

Rankings are a load of tosh, they are just a numeric ranking produced via an arbitrary algorithm using questionable data and they are very volatile & inconsistent.

UWE engineering maybe a good program (I’ve not met too many uwe graduates or researchers in my time so find it hard to judge), Bristol as a city has a lot of aerospace industry I personally wouldn’t rate UWE as a “top 10 aerospace engineering” program based on employer connections, aerospace research, industry expertise or graduate prospects.

Hi Mnot, thanks for the reply. So what would you say is the best aerospace engineering programs?

There is no “best” uiversity it depends on each student and what they need from an undergraduate university, and this of course is unique, multifaceted & extends well beyond academics & job prospects.

But the aerospace department’s i rate the highest with a focus on, students prospects/research output/technical expertise is:

Oxford

Cambridge

Imperial

Bristol

Sheffield

Nottingham

Loughbough

Strathclyde

Southampton

Got it. For me job prospect is the most important.

It’s an important point but id recommend taking account of what you want in totality.

for example compare universities such as Bristol & loughborough. Both will have similar job prospects for engineering, however they are very different environments (type of university, surrounding environment, transport, geographically area, cost of living, culture, non-academic focus of university...)

of course job prospects are one of the most important factors but hopefully my example shows there is a lot of factors still worth thinking about when deciding where is best for yourself.

One of the reason I chose to apply to at UWE was that the fees is a bit more affordable for us, It would be very difficult for my parents to afford some of the other universities like uni of bristol, thats why I was wondering what I would be missing from those who attend the those top universities. But in terms of living costs and environments I hear Bristol is a great city to live in.

It has a great reputation for nightlife & being a great student city, however by UK terms Bristol has quite a high cost of living (not as high as London) but generally it is considered more expensive, so less cost of living friendly (of course finances are personal and this is relative to UK norms).

I appreciate the insights, thank you.

Hi @Allen47

Congratulations on your offer at UWE Bristol for Aerospace Engineering 🙂

We have a great Engineering department here on our Frenchay campus, with our recently build Engineering school. Here is a link to our virtual tour Engineering | Explore | UWE Bristol Virtual tour.

There's also a careers section Aerospace Engineering - BEng(Hons) - UWE Bristol: Courses on the course page which highlights some links to our careers team and gives more details about job prospects.

Bristol is a great city to be a student in, it has something for everyone! If I can help to answer any more questions just let me know 🙂

Thanks,

Courtney
