Most useful language to learn for a career in translation/embassy work/int. relations

Which language do you think is most useful to learn for a career in translation, embassy work of international bodies such as the UN etc.

I think you should choose a language you love as you will be studying it intensely to achieve translation or simultaneous interpretation standard. Having said that check out the UN website. Farsi, by the way is not one of the UN’s official languages , ( they are Arabic,Chinese,English,French, Russian Spanish) could still be useful for NGOs etc. I’ve worked in the international relations field for years and I’d chose a language whose country and culture interests you as you’ll need to have good knowledge of the culture as well as the language.
