SQA Highers

I am starting S5 and am doing 4 Highers ( geography, business, English, and environmental science ). I failed Nat 5 maths and was planning to resit it this year. Would it be to much work if I took Higher PE as my 5th Higher and resit maths externally. PE is one of my strongest subjects but I’m not sure if it would be to much to balance out with all my highers and Nat 5 maths, especially higher environmental science as I know that is a difficult higher. Any recommendations on what to do would be very appreciated.

Doing five highers is pretty intense already, so taking five highers plus n5 maths will mean you are working with more than a full timetable and will make things like assignments/revision/consolidation of work quite challenging. Most uni offers are on the basis of four highers, apart from the most competitive courses. You are better off focusing on getting good grades in four highers and passing n5 maths, than stretching yourself too thin and getting a meh set of grades/not passing your resit. Save PE for S6, it would be a nice one to do then. Speak to your teachers though, they know you best and might have had others in the same situation before.
I would say go for it as pe is 50 percentage sports any way if you are confident in your sport also haveing maths even Nat 5 is quite important have you thought about Nat 5 applications of math you still sit and exam however it is slightly easier as there is no algebra and such it is more realistic math as well which you would use in everyday life I did it this year and I got a C which is very good for me as I’m very bad at maths I’m better at English but if your school offer it I would have a a look at it you can even have. Discussion with your teacher as well I can understand why you would want to take it aswell as there is so much competition for uni these days hoped this helped good luck 📚

I did think about sitting applications back in s3 when I was choosing my Nat 5s but my teacher recommended to just take maths as she thought I was quite strong at the subject, but seeing my results I might talk with my teacher again and see what she recommends. Thanks for the support.

I do now think that it may be a bit to much to try balance out five highers and maths outside of school so I may just take PE in s6 as I want to try maximise my grades at highers and get a good pass in maths. I will see what my school recommends. Thanks for the support.
