Anyone going to Exeter for CS?

Hey everyone! IB graduate from Kazakhstan here. I got an offer for CS at Exeter and I’m considering it alongside offers from Lancaster and others. Anyone else going to Exeter for Computer Science?

My parents are a bit skeptical about Exeter’s CS program because the university is more famous for Sports and Social Sciences like Accounting and Finance. I understand their concerns since I can’t find any “day in the life” videos of CS students, which makes it seem like the CS department might not be very active. However, I find the CS curriculum at Exeter really interesting compared to other schools as it's more traditional in its mathematical principles. I'm just afraid that the Computer Science society may not be as active at Exeter compared to other unis, prompting me to think about a transfer or not study here at all

I’d love to know if there’s a good community of ambitious CS students at Exeter. Also, do companies like IBM and Microsoft consider CS graduates from a university like Exeter?

Hello kazybekkh,

Congratulations on your offer from Exeter! I am thrilled that you love the sound of the course at Exeter because that is really important when considering your options. As a current Theology and Middle Eastern studies student myself, it really was the course that made me want to join Exeter and I am thoroughly enjoying my studies here, so it really was the selling point for me. Similarly to your thoughts on Computer Science, my subject is quite niche and I too had similar concerns. However, Computer Science is a very popular course, I have two friends who are studying it, so I have no doubt that you will be able to find plenty of likeminded people on your course. Whether it is via the Comp Sci soc, feel free to check out their Instagram perhaps to see the types of events they do hold, or by joining different societies that fulfil you other hobbies and interests. At Exeter, we really do have an extensive range of societies, from sports, Swift Soc and even Quidditch! Let me know if you would like a list of our societies.

I hope this helps,

Best,
Sophie, University of Exeter Student Ambassador.
