MSc Clinical Psychology at University of Southampton

I am split between MSc at Southampton or Reading. I'd like to know how UoS support placement applications, and whether there are a lot of opportunities to gain clinical experience.

On the website, they said that "We actively support you in setting up a work placement during your time. Previous students have set up placements at NHS Trusts, schools and charities across Hampshire." By "actively supporting", do they mean that there might be connections between the uni and some hospitals/clinics/NHS trusts? or do they just mean that they will help me with my CV?

Please help, any advice is appreciated!!!!

Hey there!

It's great to hear that your considering coming here to Southampton. The university has multiple policies in place regarding placements and internships in order to best support students. If you want to read more about the specifics, you should look at this document.

The university will have done back up checks on each of the companies that offer placements in order to ensure they're suitable, and this is the case whether you self-source your placement or use the university resources. Throughout the process, you can receive support from your tutor, the careers and employablity service, and your peers. The support ranges from talking you through options, presenting you information and directing you where you can find further information. You could meet with students who had previously gone on placement to get some perspective and ask questions as well. While you do get support, no one will be able to guarantee a placement for you or apply for you, as you have to do this yourself, but you do get to ask questions and access different services through the university etc. This is similar to most things in uni, where you are having to spearhead your own opportunities, but this doesn't mean you can get help when you ask for it.

Hope this helps!
