Best uni for business management ?

I am going to start business management at Royal Holloway this September however after looking at clearing I'm considering going to another university. I know you should pick a university based on modules and things other than reputation, but after looking at Exeter, Southampton, Lancaster, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Loughborough, I cant help but feel I have a chance to get a first class degree at a top ranking university. I plan on applying to a few now and a few on results day if they have business available. Which university is best for business and management with a good international reputation/ranking (i have plans to work abroad). I really need some advice.
As they are mostly top Unis, and BM is mega competitive, its unlikely that any of those Unis will be in Clearing. If you want that, and you get the grades, then reapply in the autumn for 5 new choices for 2025 entry and plan a gap-year.

Royal Holloway is a very decent university. However, if you decide to throw your hat into Clearing, out of the universities listed Lancaster and Loughborough have the best reputation for Business courses. Their undergrads seem very successful at getting Industrial placement which most times lead to employment after graduation. (I'm hoping you're planning to do an Industrial Placement as part of your course regardless of where you end up?).

All the ones listed are tops for business management however and you won't go too far wrong with either of them.

Thank you that helps a lot, I'm hoping I can get into one of them this year. I plan on doing a placement wherever I end up, just felt a good reputation will help me with that too.
Lancaster was in clearing last year. Think Loughborough was too. Of course each year it can differ so it’s impossible to say until results day - a few discussions on Lancaster so worth a look by searching in the search bar
Hello a322107e,

Firstly congratulations on your offer from Royal Holloway that is great news! Secondly, it really is great to hear that you are considering and or have been looking at the University of Exeter. Business management at Exeter is a great course, with plenty of optional modules available from first year all the way through to your third and or fourth year. Optional modules are a great way to tailor your degree to your interests but also shape your future career. Not failing to mention, Exeter also offers a year abroad which could be key if you wanted to work abroad in the future too. If you wanted to message or speak with a current Business Management student you can do here.

Let me know if you have any other more general questions about uni life, accommodation or more importantly clearing.

Best wishes,

Sophie, University of Exeter Student Ambassador

Hi!

Lancaster University has a great and highly reputable Business Management course (the university is ranked top 10 in the UK and top 100 (72nd) in the world for Business Management), which currently has clearing vacancies open.

Have you considered a degree with a study abroad/placement abroad option? Lancaster offers both options, and there are even courses where you can study in two countries - at Lancaster and the partner university (for example in France, Germany, Canada, Spain, Mexico..), completing two placements and gaining two degrees from both universities by the end of the course. For example: International Business Management (France) BSc Hons (N2R1) - Lancaster University
Additionally, LUMS (Lancaster Uni Management School) has a dedicated careers service specifically for LUMS students, and they offer a lot of career guidance and support with securing internships and placements (in the UK and abroad). As a student at Lancaster, I found the general careers service here to be very useful too - I was able to get 1-1 help with writing my CV, attended great interview workshops, and was assigned a mentor who works in my field of interest and who has helped me immensely. There are also a lot of short-term paid work experience opportunities available to students within the university throughout the year.

I would urge you to research the Business Management (or the close alternatives) course at Lancaster and the university yourself, to ensure you make the right choice. Additionally, Lancaster University is organising a range of Clearing-focused events in August to support you throughout the clearing process and I would encourage you to join our clearing community if you are considering Lancaster as one of your options (Clearing 2024 - Lancaster University).
Please also feel free to reach out to our students on UniBuddy or the admissions team, they will be happy to assist you with any more information.

Overall, Lancaster Management School is very diverse, has a global reputation, offers great career support, and fairly extensive international connections, so I think Lancaster might suit your interests and aspirations.

I wish you the best of luck with these important decisions. Remember not to overthink, however, as I'm sure you will make the best of any opportunity at any university 🙂

I hope this helps,
Polina,
Lancaster University Student Ambassador.

Hey @a322107e

It's awesome to hear that you are thinking about the University of Southampton for your studies. As a business management student myself, I am happy to share my insights about studying here to help you make an informed decision.

The University of Southampton is ranked 80 on the QS World University Rankings 2025. Southampton Business School has an excellent reputation both in the UK and globally, thanks to its academic excellence, research prowess, outstanding facilities, student satisfaction, and alumni success.

The Business Management course here is great! I personally found it to be incredibly rewarding as it has a well-rounded approach, combining theoretical knowledge with practical cases and real-world applications. The coursework and exams are designed in a way to help students gain practical knowledge and experience. The lectures are taught by seasoned professors that carry a wealth of experience. This always makes me excited to attend lectures, knowing I will leave with new insights and perspectives.

The course offers a diverse range of module choices, allowing students to personalise their module selection and learn about topics that interest them. You can find detailed information about the module choices for each year here. Additionally, as you are planning to work abroad, you can also consider the study abroad or placement degree options. These opportunities can greatly enhance your CV and provide valuable work experience, which will strengthen your employability prospects internationally.

Currently, we have clearing vacancies available for the Business Management courses, including those with placements and study abroad options. You can view the vacancies here. You can find all of our help with clearing on this page! If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact us at via our Clearing hotline, which opens at 8am (UK time) on 15th August: +44 (0) 3300 586940.

Beyond academics, the university provides students access to a wide range of opportunities and activities that can help them gain work experience and develop essential skills. Whether it’s on-campus jobs, enterprise events, recruiter fairs, training programs, or internships, there is something for everyone! I was a student ambassador during my first year, and I found it to be a great way to make some amazing new friends and earn money, all while balancing it with academics.

Personally, I am really enjoying my time here as the student life is extremely fun and exciting. Southampton is a lively and student-friendly with good connectivity to London and other cities. The university has a vibrant campus with green spaces and beautiful gardens. During my first year, I felt that there was always something happening that I could get involved in! There are plenty of events taking place on the campus, and there are also many pubs and places you can go out to with friends.

Overall, the University of Southampton has a great reputation, and offers the perfect balance of academic excellence, employability prospects and international connections.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to reply to this and we will get back to you as soon as we can!

All the best,

Hi @a322107e

Those are some great choices! I also recommend comparing factors such as accommodation costs, teaching quality, location, distance from home and more. Choose some factors that are personally important to you and build from there.

I currently study business and management at UCLan and I've just complete my first year. I've really enjoyed the content and feel the teaching quality was spot on, in fact UCLan's teaching quality on the Business, management and marketing undergraduate degree was rated 1st in the north west in 2023. Alongside lectures, there are lots of small workshop classes, so you can have some excellent conversations about the topics of the day alongside having more quality time to discuss the content/assignments with your tutor. I personally had never studied business before my degree, yet I've never felt that I have missing pieces of knowledge as they ensured to build our foundations before introducing more complicated concepts.

The university is also very supportive of entrepreneurial endeavours. I'm currently in the process of setting up my own business, which has went much smoother due to the advice I receive from the student enterprise team, which specifically focuses on giving business advice.

I recommend taking a look at our School of Business and seeing if it's the right fit for you!

I hope this helped, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (Business and Management)
