Hi, In Psychology journals are a large part of study for up to date information on experiments. Where you study will likely have online access to journals for free. If you are writing about older material for an essay about, say, Freud or Jung then books are used a little more. When it comes to research methods I strongly recommend 'Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology' by Coolican, it will be invaluable. I used it for my MSc Psychology (conversion) at Arden, of which I had a brilliant time, and it was essential reading

Books are good to figure out the established knowledge of Psychology. Academic journals are good to keep up to date with the new things that are happening right now. But since you will struggle to access scientific journals without paying an arm and a leg for them, it's not strictly necessary. If you can find them for free or read summaries of them on the mainstream news, that'd be excellent.
