University of York Colleges/ Accommodation

Hi! I'm starting at York in September and I was wondering if there were any stereotypes about each college or whether they're all more or less the same? As in is there a college known for being the party college for example?

Hi you can read this article by The Tab which pretty much sums up each college stereotype:

In general Alcuin is known as being a quiet college whereas James and Derwent are known as party colleges

Hi there,

Congratulations on your offer to study at York 🎉 We can't wait to welcome you on to campus this September!

As a York graduate myself, I can confirm that there are some college stereotypes floating around, but these aren't really true and are generally based on where the college is located on campus in relation to certain facilities. For example, James College is sometimes stereotyped as the 'sporty college' because it's next to the York Sports Centre on Campus West. But every college has its own sports teams, so you'll be able to get involved with sport at a college- or University-level, whichever college you're in.

Ultimately, although each college has its own history and character, they all provide the same things and are your foundation for getting involved in campus life and a gateway to exploring the wider university community.

I hope that helps! - Hannah 😀
