Hello,

Thanks for reaching out 😁

Yes I have looked for groups on Facebook but I can’t seem to find any related to my course. I will keep an eye out though. I might even create one 😁

Good luck for September 🙌

Hi @AmyALF12

Congratulations on your place at university! What will you be studying?

I am a mature student studying at the University of Salford. I am about to go into my final year and I was feeling pretty nervous myself this time two years ago. Here are some things that helped me...

🍀 First, you’ll be surprised at how many other mature students are studying at university and keen to meet others like themselves. Therefore if you can attend any it is worth getting involved in Freshers Week. I decided to give all the Freshers events I was comfortable with a go, everyone advised me to say “Yes” to opportunities, so I did.

I made some of my best friends after attending a “speed friending” freshers' event, which wasn’t anywhere near as awkward as it sounds. There was also a mature student’s event where I met several other mature students, some of whom are now my best friends at the university.

🍀 Secondly, these friends started a Mature Students Society, which is a very chilled and low-key society. This is because we appreciate that mature students can have especially busy lives and limited availability, we vary the times and days we meet and the activities we participate in from karaoke and arcade events to a quick coffee. I have met lots of lovely mature students through this. It is worth checking if there is a society like this at your university if that sounds like something you’d be interested in. Societies are a brilliant way to meet like-minded people of all ages, as you can bond over a similar interest be it archery, board games, Taylor Swift, or swimming.

🍀 Another way to meet people is through work if this is something you are looking to do part-time whilst studying. I work as a student ambassador for my university, which I love and have made some amazing friends through this.

🍀Last but not least you could speak to your tutors as mine were good at connecting me with other mature students on my course either in my year or the year above.

I hope this helps. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

Lucy 😊

Hey @AmyALF12 how are you? 🤗

It's exciting to hear you're starting university this September! I really do miss being a student, I loved my time at uni!

It's so normal to feel nervous, but people of all ages go to university, so I'm sure there's plenty of people feeling the exact same way. Your uni might hold events for mature students, so you get to know the place and meet new people in a similar situation to yourself. So I'd recommend keeping an eye on any events that come up when you first start, and then also throughout the year. Like Lucy said below, there might also be a mature student society you could join, so definitely engage with the students' union if you can.

It really is never too late to live your dream. And being a mature learner you've got the edge of bringing life and work experience with you too! If you're worried about balancing home and uni life you could get in touch with your university's Academic Support Team, they might be able to help with time management and finding that right balance. All students will get a personal tutor too so if you have any concerns whilst you're studying they'll be able to provide support and advice 🙂

Best of luck with your university journey! I'm sure you'll have the best time

Hi Amy, I’m also a mature student starting in September, studying Law. Hbu?

Have you joined the UoM Mature student society whatsapp gc? Perhaps you may find someone doing the same course as you there.
