HELP - How much extra reading is actually needed for oxbridge/RU/ top unis?

I’m really stressed about the amount of extra reading I actually need to do for uni applications, is there a recommended amount or is 2-3 books enough for top unis?
You should only apply to Oxford or Cambridge if you are prepared to read a lot. The typical successful applicant reads extensively before applying, and the typical undergraduate at such universities reads a large amount while studying there. It's not a tick the box exercise of a question of "how many books?" You need to be pretty passionate about reading to compete at that level.

It depends on your subject. As a Maths student, I only mentioned one book and that was only to find more things to look into; the actual book itself wasn't super relevant. If you're applying for English, for example, I'd assume you may be expected to have read a little more.

I don't think it is a case of read 2 books and job done. I think it is the case that you are constantly curious and constantly expanding your mind and reading. If this isn't you, it might be that Oxbridge (regardless of the status) is rather overwhelming and possibly not for you. It certainly isn't my bag.
As has been said, it really depends on subject (and what other super-curriculars you have to mention in your personal statement). I didn't mention a single book in my ps when I applied in 2006 and that wasn't a problem because in my subject (music), you're not necessarily expected to mention any.

As has been said above, for English Lit, it's a completely different story!
