Thats only GEM(Graduate Entry Medicine) that you need a degree for, hence the name.

You don't need a degree for undergrad medicine. It is much less competitive than GEM

No for 2026 search up you can do 4 year undergraduate medicine moving to 4 from 5 years
I have seen somebody else post this / another thread on a similar vein. I think that person said it was somewhere in the NHS Workforce Plan. I have had a look and can't find it.

However, the NHS Workforce plan was a document of the previous Conservative government so is subject to change.

I have also looked on the medicalschoolscouncil website and can't immediately see anything there. Can you provide a link to the info please? Would be really interested to read about this. Thank you.

As it currently stands, undergrad is 5 years (or poss 6 in some circumstances); and Graduate Entry Medicine is 4.

There were also proposals for medicine apprenticeships.

From my understanding of the link you shared, this is a plan to implement a 4 year undergraduate medicine course in 2026. This does not seem to be set in stone and is mentioned as a pilot scheme (trialling it if it works) that is planned to be rolled out in 2026. Buckingham University was the only named (bear in mind that this is likely to be private) medical school in the article, so it may be worth submitting an FOI (freedom of information) request on the whatdotheyknow website regarding this. Please come back to us if you get a response and we can help you from there

As mentioned above, this was under the previous government, there does not seem to have been any talk of this with the current government. So this seems to require a wait and watch approach.

@_Rusty_ has explained above that an undergraduate degree does not require a previous degree. If this does roll out, it is stated to be undergraduate.

PRSOM😊

Thank you for this. I had been reading the GMC proposals on the future of medical education (from March) and hadn’t connected it to the NHS England proposals. Interesting to read.

Agree with KA_P though, it’s a bit of a wait and see for me.

All this fiddling around at the front end makes me more concerned for the bottlenecks for post foundation progression. Ho hum.
