Anxious About Living in Leeds?

Hi guys,

I've been torn for a while about whether to go to Liverpool or Leeds to study, but Leeds Beckett definitely has a much better course and is a bigger uni than Liverpool Hope (I'd be studying the Popular Music and Culture MA). However, the crime rates are making me uneasy and I suspect my family as well. How safe is Leeds really?

(Btw I'm from Birmingham so maybe the worry is moot- but I generally have always felt safe here and as I'm South Asian I've been able to fit in well).

Alright,

I have been studying in Leeds at Leeds Beckett Uni for a year now. Personally I have not experienced anything unsafe but I have heard of things happening from friends experiences. I think if you generally avoid certain areas after dark like Hyde Park and other spots you should be fine.

If you’re from Birmingham, I’m being 100% honest here you’ve got nothing to be worried about. The thing is with crime rates, they’re not an accurate depiction of how a city really is. Take Birmingham for example, the crime rate there is 143.1 per 1000 people which is 60% more than the average! Now, if someone was to tell you I’m terrified of visiting bham, you’d assure them it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. Leeds is the same, don’t get me wrong there’s some very dodgy area (like all cities) but as a whole as long as you’re not involved in the criminal underworld you’ll be safe. Also have you forgotten that Leeds neighbours Bradford??? There’s South Asians everywhere so you’ll feel like you’re home.
