Stuck on whether to pick up FM for computer science degree...

Hi, just stuck choosing to focus achieving a Further Maths AS level, and applying for computer science at Russel Group universities or focusing on revising for TMUA entrance exam for Imperial. I have been predicted A*A*A (Maths, Music Technology, Physics). Is it worth just getting the Further Maths AS - and possibly A-level and then applying to 5 other good universities, since I see Imperials statistics are 17:1 applicants! Thanks.

For Imperial you basically have no chance without a level FM unfortunately. Same for Oxbridge. But for most other unis, you should be fine without it.

I would really recommend it ! , AS level further maths is not too hard and is mainly just new concepts. The only difficult might be the increased workload if you’re not used to it. Computer science at uni is mainly just maths ( lots and lots of maths ) so the further maths a level will benefit you in the long run. Imperial is extremely competitive , but you got this and you should believe in yourself !

Thanks, so its not worth revising for TMUA test for Imperial/Warwick, since even if I get a good score, without FM I am not as competitive?

I would recommend doing both at the same time, It's not too hard to balance both. I take FM and also have to take the TMUA but i managed to teach myself further maths in around 2 weeks all it takes is just some time and dedication. Most applicants will have further maths so having no further maths is a big disadvantage ( especially if your school offers it ) but having a average tmua mark doesn't have too much of a effect.

Thanks for this! Did you teach yourself the whole A-level or just the AS in 2 weeks?

You probably need an above average TMUA to stand a decent chance, as well as FM.

Imperial get lots of applicants and many are very good. To get in, you should do *everything* you can to stand out and not just the minimum you think you can get away with.

Whole A level, I do have to add I have been told I'm good at maths and I do find it enjoyable so you really don't need to do this but it is possible

Yeah most imperial applicants are just cracked. To get in you will have to do tons and tons and tons of work.

Not a problem, I am prepared to do the work, and now seeing FM is alot more important, I will continue the AS and aim to do the full A-level. I am also wondering if its worth, if I get rejected from Imperial this year, taking a gap year since hopefully I will achieve at best 4 A*'s, and then will have essentially a whole year to work on MAT and TMUA for both Oxford and Imperial. Basically, are those universities worth a year out if I don't get in this time round? Thanks!

Other unis are definitely great too! But ultimately the choice of whether to do a gap year lies with you and your own aspirations. Many do take gap years and succeed in their original goals thereafter. Also worth noting that FM can help with MAT/TMUA by boosting familiarity with complex calculations as long as you do plenty of practice.

Best to study FM at AS level for good academic preparation.

Hi again, just wanted to ask if you are now in Year 13? BTW I have also now nearly covered all of CP1, except Vectors! Thanks for encouraging me to continue it again.
