Abusive Partner and Student loan

Hi,

Trying to apply for student loan for 2024/2025. I live with an abusive partner, not by choice. Putting them as "partner living as if married" feels wrong, they mentally, physically and emotionally abuse me. I can't rely on them for stability so I don't think their income should be taken into account. I'm not completely sure what "living as if married" even entails.

I'm under 25, no kids, never married. Can I choose the option of "single"?

I'm especially concerned because I'm estranged from my parents so I am not supported by them, so I need the full loan amount to afford a place to live.

I appreciate the help in advance
Hi atomic-puzzle,

If you are under 25 we would usually need your parents details in order to income assess your application. If you no longer have contact with them and are not married you can apply as an estranged student by completing a Confirmation of Estrangement form. If you give us a call on 0300 100 0607 or start a live chat through your online account we can email you a copy of this form.

Thanks,
Calum
Hi, Thank you for the reply

I will be applying as an estranged student (as I have before, this isn't my first time applying) but that's separate to the section that ask's about the my relationship status. I'm still not sure if I should put single or living with partner, especially because the "as though you are married" is ambigious.
Hi atomic-puzzle,

I would advise answering this question as honestly as possible. If you are living with a partner you should indicate this. We won't take the income details of a cohabiting partner into account if you are under 25.

Thanks,
Calum
I appreciate the information and will think about how best to answer it. Unfortunatelty "living as if married" is very vague and subjective which leaves people in my situation with confusion. It's difficult to be truthful when the information being given and that I can give back, doesn't allow full transparency. I understand this is an issue with the system and not the reps and hope it'll be changed soon to make the process easier.
