Help with student finance update

Hi.
We're struggling with student finance & don't know what to do. Calling them Monday but was hoping someone may have been in a similar position & be able to advise.

At home is mum & stepdad, separated but still both living in same house as neither can afford to buy the other one out. Step parent can't/won't financially support for university but SFE have counted their income so maintenance won't even cover rent.

Mum simply doesn't have the money, is their anyway SFE will discount the step parents income for the calculation. There's no date to when they'll move out, it could be over a year. They're willing to write a formal statement to SFE stating they won't support but doubt that'll make any difference.

University has a hardship fund but it looks like they'd also count the step parent income so not eligible.

Would switching to your dad’s household income improve things?

Haven't seen him in years, don't know his details to provide to SFE either.
I suspect SFE would need a letter from a solicitor in that case to confirm the situation

Thanks. Will see what they say tomorrow.

Hi there, did you contact us via telephone or do you still require assistance with this? Thanks, Jason

We called thanks. Ultimately it's either legally divorce or one move out 😔

Hi there,

Just to check, have both your Mum and Step-Dad provided their income details, or is your Step-Dad refusing to do this at the moment?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi.

Both have provided income, it was done as soon as we could. They've since separated but as long as they both live here & aren't legally divorced his income will count. It means the maintenance will be about £6500 when rent alone is over £13000. Haven't got any other offers so no chance to go somewhere cheaper unfortunately.

Hi there, I would advise also checking with the university for any additional funding that the student may be eligible for. Some universities offer bursary, grants or additional financial aid, so it's worthwhile checking if they qualify for any of this. Thanks, Jason
