Work after qualifying

Hello I am a student nurse due to finish in September 2024 when I will receive my NMC pin and be registered as a nurse. I have a job as registered nurse for waiting for me when I finish however it doesn’t start til November 2024. I currently work as a healthcare assistant at the CHFT but once I receive my NMC pin I will no longer be able to here with a nursing pin. I can not afford not to work for the 2 months while I wait to start my job and looking for something I can do between this time (September-November). Any advice?

Hi @Jadevkelly

Firstly, congrats on becoming a registered nurse!

You could try looking on Indeed Flex for some temporary work. You can pick up temporary shifts as and when you please for nearby employers, which might work for you as you're only looking for something for a short period of time.

There may also be more jobs becoming available at the moment and towards September as students begin moving for university.

I'm not sure if you have a preference over what work you do in this time, but I know near where I live, supermarkets are almost always hiring.

Hope the job search goes okay. 🙂

Hi jade 😊 😊

Consider on getting there as a student nurse and hopefully you are looking forward to being a qualified nurse soon.

Usually you are offered a temporary band 4 nurse position once you are officially finished your nursing degree ( providing you have passed your finals exams etc) while you await your NMC pin back. Then once you receive your NMC pin 📌 you arrange a suitable date of starting your newly qualified band 5 nursing position.

I worked as a temporary band 4 midwife until such time I received my NMC pin back and then I was able to arrange starting date for position of band 5. I think I received mine in about two weeks. ( I qualified in summer 2019).
I went from full-time employment in a supermarket to part-time employment for the duration of my midwife degree and I still work in the supermarket on my days of.

Usually your NMC pin will take about two weeks minimum but can take abit longer depending on how quickly they receive all your information required and if they have to do any further checks on you.

If you don't get offered a temporary band 4 nurse position then you should perhaps ask to work few extra days per week as a HCA until such time you start your new nursing position..

Good luck with things.

A NHS registered midwife.
