Children’s nursing

Hey,
I’m considering going into children’s nursing at uni. I’m weighing up all of my options and was just wondering if people could share their experiences and advice?

Hiya.
Going to get my results on Thursday, with my firm choice being CYP nursing at Herts.
Obviously this means I can't tell you about placement, course work, n things like that, but I'm happy to tell you about applying and stuff.

For experience and advice about the courses I'd recommend asking current students on open days. Many unis have 'student-buddy' type things so you can be paired up with a current student online and ask about student life, the course, placement, what they recommend, things like that.
Tagging our health team in this one who will be able to help! 🙂 @CCCU Health Rep

They have a super useful thread on interviews and personal statements though if you want to check them out 🙂

Fab to hear you are interested in becoming a child nurse! 😃

It is a dedicated 3 years of training, but so rewarding at the same time. The key thing to note is that you are passionate about the career and supporting young people and their families in a range of different ways. As another user has mentioned, speaking to current students on the course at university open days is a really good insight into what training might look like and what they have learnt already/are looking forward to.

If you can get any work experience before you apply, this will really help both you and your application (even if it isn't directly in a healthcare setting!). Transferable skills are so valuable as you can apply these to your future profession (i.e. being a good communicator in a hospitality part-time job maps over great to the role of a child nurse).

Definitely take a look at the threads that @CCCU Official posted for advice on your application and interview, and take a look at some day in the life videos of a child nurse online too 🙂

What part of being a child nurse really interests you?
Hi Lucy,

I’m in my final year of Child Nursing and I definitely recommend it!

It is a very rewarding job and you have a variety of different experiences and gain skills for life.

In regards to placement and coursework to become a registered nurse you need to complete 2300hrs of placement over 3 years, at LJMU your placements can be a mixture of community based and hospital based, during hospital based placements you complete 12.5hr shifts. You have blocks of placement so you’re not in University when on placement and placement blocks can range from 4-10 weeks.

Regarding coursework, this can be mixture of assignments, PowerPoints and written exams. University give you plenty of support in regard to completing coursework and attending placement and the library support is excellent!

I have really enjoyed my University experience at LJMU and Nursing is an amazing career opportunity.

If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask ☺️.

Hi,

I'm currently a 2nd year childrens nurse at Wrexham University, through my experiences so far I have found the course has been amazing! 🙂

On the university side of things, you will find that you need to complete 2300 hours of both theory and placement hours respectfully. This flies by - especially on placements!

In terms of day-to-day responsibilities this will vary from each university and placement area alongside your year of practice. For example, last year I completed observations, documentation, attended with staff to A&E, and went to watch an operation in theatre. All of these have been amazing experiences and allowed for a professional relationship to be built with the patients and their families. It's amazing to be a part of a childs journey through their time in hospital or in the community.

Whilst there are emotional times I found that the universities and the local healthboards support teams have been amazing. Additionally, by having de-stresses such as arts and crafts as well as playing games I have been able to relax following stressful shifts, which hopefully you'll be able to do to!

In terms of applying for the course this will vary depending on if you apply via UCAS or by the university itself, you will most likely recievce an offer for an interview before recieving your conditional offer.

Please see the following link for more information on applying/ the interview process and an in-sight into a day in the life as a childrens nurse on placement here at Wrexham University 🙂
