I’m currently doing a placement year and I’ll finish my masters in 2027 for chem Eng. I want to move to Australia soon but also wanted to become charted how will I go about this?

You need to meet and maintain the requirements for chartership. Check their website.

The IChemE is a global organisation, you will need a masters/equivalent standard education in chemical engineering & you’ll need to demonstrate the engineering council competencies (available online) to a high standard and have appropriate amount of experience typically 4+ years work after graduation.
It’s worth noting there is also an Australian engineering institution called Engineers Australia which represents all engineering disciplines but is a national professional body, not international.

So can I only move to Australia once I become charted in the UK and does my chartered status in the uk transfer to Australia?

The IChemE is a global body, so you would never loose your chartered status as long as you remained a member even if you live & work in Australia. That said if you settled permanently in Australia you would probably be best off moving affiliation (ultimately these bodies host conferences/networking events/awards/journals etc. So you’re best off affiliating with the one which is most relevant for your career).
That said you would be able to transfer your chartered engineer status to Engineers Australia if you wanted to, it’s common practice to allow members to membership between various engineering bodies both nationally & internationally.

What if I haven’t became a charted engineer yet before moving to Australia?

Then you can apply directly to Australia engineers or apply to IChemE whilst working in Australia. Institution Membership i.e. chartership is dictated by competency not where you work (I don’t know the requirements for engineers Australia but id imagine it’s very similar to the UK institutions).

Okay thank you! Also do you know if my year experience would count towards experience for accreditation obviously not just that but would this year count?

Time is never actually measured on the application, however the competency levels for chartership are akin to that beyond that of an early career/junior engineer.
So 4 years is really about as fast as it’s achievable & it can take longer. But yes your experiences would be valid. Chartership is not about applying random box checking (like what country do you undertake specific projects) but more about ensuring a certain standard but generally the institutions want as many chartered members as possible but whilst maintaining a high standard so the title & membership is meaningful (chartership is a legally protected title hence why the expectations are beyond that of a junior engineer who has recently started their career).

Chartership in Australia will work differently to the uk- when you move there you'll become of an Australian professional association with their own processes. In the UK it typically takes 4-5 years to get chartered post graduation if you're really on it. In aus I'm not sure how it works but it's a different professional organisation with different rules

The professional institution in Australia is called “Engineers Australial” (its a single professional body for all engineering disciplines) & the OP could still charter through the IChemE & transfer membership across if they start CDP in the UK. Im almost certain it works very similarly to the UK bodies i,e, similar professional competencies as ive know of people to transfer across from UK.

So do you think it’s better to stay in the uk and become charted then move or move straight away?
