Clearing after A level results

Can I apply through clearing to a university with higher entry requirements than what I actually got in my A levels?

Unis will publish their Clearing vacancies on their websites on Weds eve or Thurs am - this is the up-to-date info for Results Day Clearing. Most will state the minimum clearing requirements/grades.

If they have stated a minimum entry requirement and you don't meet that, its pretty much a waste of time phoning - and by the time you have hung on, got a reply and been told no, you could have phoned somewhere else and got an offer.
Hi @Sanji.m

Generally no. The only exception is if you are eligible for a contextual offer or if you have extenuating circumstances.

There are no contextual offers in Clearing because Clearing staff dont have the time/experience to assess this.
Unis don’t have access to the info they need to determine if you meet their contextual criteria via the clearing call.

As above, the clearing grades will already be reduced in many cases.

Hi

Generally in clearing, you will need to meet the offer that the university has provided you.

If your grades are slightly below the requirements then you may be placed on a waiting list and if there are still spaces left on the course after the main clearing period you may get contacted to see if you want to still take up the position on the course.

I hope this helps,

'Waiting lists' might be how somewhere like Wrexham does Clearing - but no other Uni has the time, or capacity, for that.

Unfortunately I heard of quite a few that did this last year. Let’s hope for everyone’s sake it’s not as much of a muddle as it was last year.

Hi! It totally depends on the university and whether there are spaces available on the course that you’re interested on. Check out the university websites, where you will be able to see what the current clearing requirements are (if you are interested in City University, check out our Clearing webform at https://clearing.city.ac.uk/apply). While the requirements on results day may change if more spaces are available, there is no guarantee of this!
