Regarding order of writing up dissertation

Hello

Just on here to ask if anyone have an order to write the dissertation systematically, so that it makes sense to them when they are writing it? this may be different to the order at which the dissertation is suppose to be writing (i.e writing up chapter 2 first)

Sometimes you've got to go with how you feel. Some people like to do it in a set order. Others (like me) preferred to write stuff when you felt a brainwave that helped with a particular section. There is no wrong way to do it. I know this isn't a concrete answer but hopefully it helps a little?
Begin with a 3k lit review to identify the gap in current research which your own reseach will fill. Then write a 2.5 to 3k methodology chapter covering - your research philosophy, your approach to theory development, your methodological choice, your strategy, the time horizon and data collection techniques.
After that conduct your primary research (getting ethics approval first) then provide a 'findings' chapter. The next chapter should be your 'discussion' where you evaluate your own findings against what has been written in the lit review. Identify any contradictions or new findings. Close off with the conclusions chapter. Then you loop back to the start and write your abstract and introduction.

Just get a book out from the library on how to write a dissertation.

Thank you appreciate it.

Hello @susan_ogundiran7
When i was writing my dissertation, i wrote my literature review first. Then next I did my data analysis so it seemed logical to write my methodology and results section next. Then I wrote the introduction followed by the discussion section and finally the conclusions. This may vary however dependent on the nature of your dissertation and whether your using primary or secondary data. A key thing which was useful was referencing as you go, and not to leave that to the end.
Hope this helps!

All of mine were subject to my whims (including my doctoral one) so whilst I had something of a plan and a flow in mind from the off (necessary, I think, for so thing like philosophy), I didn't write them all, in their totality, in order. I'd switch focus depending on mood, or depending on an idea I had. Then later, I'd find a way to weave things together.

At one point, I stopped writing my PhD thesis for about 2 months to fanny about with translations instead, and at the time I didn't even know if I could get these translations into the thing.

If you're in a discipline which needs data analysis and discussion of results then in my mind it's easier to do the sections in order. But I never have been so it wasn't so thing I cared about.

Conclusion and then intro last, though - that's good advice from Mike.

Hi susan_ogundiran7,
This is a great question! I actually wrote my second chapter first, just because I felt as though I knew the most about this chapter and had a lot of content to pack in! I then wrote my third chapter, my first was actually last! I saved the introduction and conclusion for the end. That said, it's entirely up to you how you approach it! My advice is to begin with the section where you feel most confident. Once you have a full draft, you'll have the opportunity to edit everything together and ensure it flows well.
