bee's yr13 gyg journey
Hey~ I'm Bee and I'm starting yr13 in September! I want to keep a little blog because I know this year will be really important for me and I would like to document it consistently to look back on 😊
About Me:

Subjects: English Literature, Politics and French

I did AS English Literature (OCR), History (OCR), Politics (Edexcel) and French (AQA) in yr12 - AAAC

GCSEs: 999999887

Predicted grades: pending <3

Uni course: French and Linguistics

Unis: Oxford (Worcester College), York, Manchester, Warwick & QMUL

I would like to become a Diplomat in the future and be a polyglot

Revision strategies for yr13: making summary notes -> making flashcards with key info on remnote -> essay plans on notion -> transferring the essay plans to anki for spaced repetition & blurting

I also want to use this gyg to keep myself accountable as I have A LOT to do this summer and have done NONE of it  I've procrastinated almost everything imaginable (including starting a gyg) but those days are over!!! I use the YPT app to track my tasks and studying so if anyone is interested in making a study group, I'd be happy to motivate each other on there!
Thank you for reading ~

just finished a-levels
will be happy to support new year 13s💙💙

Today I was motivated to work... until it got hard. I was revising global politics (again) and it was really annoying me because I could not figure out how I wanted to structure my revision materials. I'm the type of person who loses motivation if everything is going exactly as I would like so it put me in a bit of a bad mood lol

I took a 4hr 'break' and was prepared to just give up on the day and try again tomorrow but then I watched this video by Lucy Wang about procrastination and her first point about not 'wasting days' when things don't go exactly to plan really resonated with me because I have the tendency to just give up and say I'm going to try again the next day

I didn't return to politics today (for the sake of my mental sanity) but I did do some french grammar which was always really fun and it genuinely cheered me up!

I did the subjunctive for regular verbs and I enjoyed finding little tricks to remembering the conjugations. The subjunctive is always something that I was always taught in phrases like il faut que je fasse etc etc without any of my teachers spending the time to show us how to really do it from scratch so this session was very helpful

Hi I’m also doing very similar subjects to you and I struggle revising French grammar as there is so much to remember for irregulars 😭 please enlighten me as to how you study for it, thanks 🙏

Hi! Honestly grammar is just about practice practice practice! I like to make little songs (it sounds silly and cringe lol) to remember things like conjugations and specific grammar rules. You just have to look at the rules, practice it, look at the rules and keep going over it again and again. I have a French Grammar textbook that has plenty of examples to work through and I think alevel grammar workbooks should have a lot as well. I think something that is really useful is to test if it sounds right. If the pronunciation is awkward and not as smooth then something might be wrong grammatically in the sentence; like the conjugation being irregular and having a different ending, or maybe something like the proposition being wrong. To test myself on conjunctions, I pick a random verb and conjugate it in every tense. It takes a while, but then I can correct it and see which tenses I got wrong or if the verb is irregular in certain instances. I find reading in French or watching shows/videos with subtitles very helpful as you see the grammar in context and learn the patterns from seeing French speakers use it. I would also recommend the Youtube channel 'Learn French with Alexa' as she has really great grammar videos.

didn't bother much with work today since I started my period ;-; and just wanted to chill out a bit

i did go through some politics flashcards (as usual) and did some french subjunctive practice

I got a bit bored later on and decided to do a practice MLAT paper just for fun and I found the grammar fairly easy to grasp which means my revision so far has been paying off! It's genuinely so rewarding when I remember how to do the question because of something I learnt this summer.

The translation into English was mostly alright, but I found myself getting stuck on little bits in the questions towards the end like translating all the little 'lui' and 'le' bits that they love to throw into sentences. I'm also finding that there's not as much emphasis on being super literal in your translation. You can opt for what feels most natural as long as it's reasonable, unlike in the alevel course where you do have to get creative to make the sentences make sense but it's still a lot stricter regarding certain aspects that you *need* and organising the sentences in a very particular way.

So far I'd say that I'm enjoying revising for the MLAT. I guess I'll take this as a sign that I should be doing French at Uni

good luck for the MLAT girl and take care during your period ❤️*🩹 i hate the little lui le bits too! COD and COI suck 😢

Doing a much needed update! I want to start doing daily updates but I've taken the past few days off to relax after completing all my summer hw.
Before school starts, I would like to slowly start going through my yr12 content again just to keep it fresh. I know I am going to have some kind of exam when I get back so I want to be prepared. I'm somewhat dreading all the politics flashcards I have to get through, but I just need to do a little bit at a time ~
FYI: This list is VERY ambitious, I might not get through all of it, but if I can do at least a little bit, I think I will put myself in a good spot for yr13.
French:
[🎯] finish reading No et Moi [pg. 158/158] (I lowkey hate it 😭)
[🎯] continue doing daily grammar practice for mlat
Politics (whew):
[🎯] go through paper 1 flashcards
[🎯] go through paper 2 flashcards
[🎯] make ideologies: socialism summary notes
[🎯] make global: theories summary notes
[🎯] make global: globalisation summary notes
[🎯] make global: bipolarity summary notes
[🎯] update notes with 2024 election info
English:
[⏳] finish coursework book [pg. 135/201] 💀💀
[🎯] complete Handmaid's Tale summary review
[🎯] annotate poetry anthology
Also a list of fun things I want to do:
[🎯] buy a new tote/handbag for school!
[🎯] picnic with friends!
key:
[ -- ] = not started // [⏳] = in progress // [🎯] = completed

Hey friends! Don't worry I did NOT forget about my gyg already! I just took these last few days to finish my tasks (which I've updated on the summer to-do list post), relax, and get ready for the new school year! Tomorrow is my 1st day of year 13 (omg!!) it feels scary but also exciting! I will definitely give you all an update on how things go! I can't wait to see my friends again after a loooong summer. I genuinely really enjoyed my summer because I managed to complete a lot of what I wanted to get done, go out with friends a lot, and relax. I feel like I really found the perfect balance this summer!

How was your summer? Is there anything you're looking forward to this new academic year?

that’s so good that you had a productive and fun summer 😊 My summer ended on the 19th of august but it was pretty good, went to summer camp and had fun with friends and pretty much discovered me as a person and would like to continue that journey. Anyways how was your first day of year 13

WHEW! Day 1 and 2 of year 13 were A LOT.

I forgot how packed my sixth form is so seeing all the new year 12s made me feel a bit suffocated 😭 but I could tell they were so nervous which was quite cute. On my first day back, we just did the usual summer icebreakers and admin for the new school year so it wasn't anything challenging, but I slept as soon as I got home. It's like the school atmosphere made me so exhausted. It was so good to see my friends again and compare timetables to see if we would be in the same classes.

Officially the first day of lessons and it was great! I love my teachers and my subjects are genuinely interesting so I had a good time. I'm also enjoying the extra study time since I dropped a subject. I'm at a point where I don't have a lot to do yet so I'm taking it easy as it's just a lot of recap of yr12 content which I went through over the summer. I am also finding that I don't feel the need to hang around my friends as much and I'm fine being on my own and doing my own thing. Last year, I was in a big group and we were ALWAYS together but it feels good to have some space alone just to relax and do things I like, such as watching Dress to Impress videos 😄 at lunch, and I'm glad I have friends that let me be alone from time to time, instead of getting upset that I'm not there all the time, as I have had issues with people like that in the past. So far, year 13 is pretty good but we will see how long this positivity will last...
