I want to study architecture but if it doesn't work then I'm doing medicine

So I want to study architecture and I have planned out the subjects I want for A levels, which are Maths, Physics,Fine art and biology. However I have been told that I can't pick these subjects together which is confusing me more as if I can't pursue architecture then I am planning to switch to medicine and be a doctor.I don't know what to pick anymore and I still want to leave myself options if my plan doesn't work out.
I think those are good options for architecture, but I know for medicine that quite at quite a few unis, chemistry is required for medicine, but it depends what universities you want to apply to...

Also, did they say that you cant take those subjects as a combination for architecture or was it because of the school's option blocks?

Those are two radically different careers.
What is it about working as an architect that appeals to you?
You don’t need maths and physics for architecture unless you want to study at the tiny minority of universities that prefer those subjects. Creative subjects and design work will give you a much broader choice of architecture courses.

I suggest you get some practical 'medicine related' work experience, such as working/volunteering in a care-home, and then think about whether you actually want to do Medicine.

If you are considering medicine at later stage, Chemistry is the most important. Chem, Bio, Maths gives you the widest choice of unis. But would definitely benefit you if you get some work experience within medical setup to see if you really want to do medicine.

Okay, Architecture normally doesn't need any specific subjects to be able to pursue them at degree level, if you are good at art, I'd not take Fine Art at A-level, as you can create you're own portfolio and most schools find individual projects a bit more impressive, also most med schools usually look for the combination of Maths, Bio and Chem, so not taking chemistry is a risk. I'd just take Maths, Bio, Chem and Physics if you're willing to do 4 subjects and if they let you do it. I know people who didn't do a creative subject and got into really well ranked school without it, just have an impressive portfolio and personal statement full of super-curricular archtiecture related things, read lots of books on architecture, do online and in person programmes, such as Accelerate, do an EPQ on Architecture, go to an architecture summer school. Also remember that Med schools also expect you to have passed the UCAT so that is another thing to consider. It'll be very difficult and time consuming but rewarding in the long run. Good Luck!

It’s a tiny minority of med schools that require maths or physics

OP would be best looking at the medicine forum sticky threads for details on current med school requirements.

Good to know - I guessed it was only those few Cam colleges still but didn’t want to risk guessing wrong

They did briefly (I swear I didn't imagine it!!) change the language on the main admission page earlier this year to say it's required for all, but it doesn't say that now

That said while it's not technically required for all colleges, it is functionally necessary to achieve a competitive interview score and less than 2% of the 2% of applicants with only 2 STEM subjects are successful each year (i.e. around 0-2 students each cycle...). They do actually call out this data in their admissions page for the subject too

I tweaked my original spoiler comment to make that a little clearer :colondollar:

So technically less than 1 requires it formally (but exactly 1 requires it informally) :s-smilie: And you are very right that no other medical school cares

At most universities chemistry is also required for med. you could choose maths, fine art, chem and bio?
