hello!

just wondering, if you receive a phone offer from a university to study a particular course and then add that offer to your application, could the uni still reject you?

Yes. The verbal offer isn't binding. It's only once you add that course as your Clearing choice in UCAS, and you receive a formal offer of a place as a result, that it's binding.

This could happen if the information you've given over the phone (or via a web form) doesn't tally with information in your UCAS application.

Also, some unis (*cough* Durham) have a reputation for making many more people informal offers over those phone than they have space for. So many such verbal offers don't result in a real offer. Hopefully they've cleaned-up their act this year.

As above.

In addition I would be wary of a university that doesn’t send confirmation of your informal clearing offer by email. Having your offer written down with a clear deadline should be a standard thing universities provide to clearing applicants
