clearing on results day

if i've met my firm uni's requirements and i have been accepted into the course but i no longer wish to do this course and i have made this decision very late, can i still reject my university offer on results day?

also if i do reject my offer on results day would this mean i would have to wait before i can go into clearing?

Once you meet the offer conditions of your firm you get a "Decline my place" button in UCAS Hub. Once you click that, you drop into Clearing. However, you can't do so until Thursday as UCAS is "read-only" right now whilst unis make their decisions. But you will be able to do that from Thursday onwards.

Please be very sure you want to decline your place. The decision cannot be undone (even if you then fail to secure a place via Clearing.)
Its worth phoning some other Unis to ask about Clearing places before you dump a confirmed place.
And remember - there is always a gap-year a reapplying to 5 new choices as another option.

Hi @z...z
Yes you still have the choice to reject your firm university and enter into clearing.
I would recommend ringing your desired university as soon as you get your results, to see if they can make you a clearing offer. Then once you have a guaranteed clearing offer you are happy with, you can go onto UCAS and decline your firm university.
Hope this helps, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

As @mesub says, it's straight away. (Well, they actually make you fill out a small form to make absolutely sure that you understand the ramifications of declining your place, and that you haven't clicked the button by accident - but that'll only add a delay of a minute or so.)

Decline my place - Step 2.jpg

Note that even though you'll be immediately in Clearing, you can't add your Clearing choice into UCAS Hub until 1:00 pm anyway. So you can spend the morning calling-up unis, and getting confirmation as to whether or not they'd accept you if you were to apply via Clearing. If they all say, "No" you might want to hang-on to that firms choice after all!

When I call up universities in the morning, do I need a clearing ID or can I just explain that I wish to change my course?

Hi
Your clearing number is usually needed so that the university is able to offer you a place through UCAS clearing. To be able to add a clearing choice you will need to release any offers that you already accepted as you cannot go through clearing until you decline any offers that you previously accepted.
Hope this makes sense!

You don't get a Clearing ID until you're actually in Clearing. Assuming you follow the advice above and don't click "Decline my place" until after you've spoken to some Clearing options, then you won't have a Clearing ID. So just explain that you want to change course, and you're just checking whether or not you're likely to be accepted via Clearing before declining your firm place.

Note that some universities may be reluctant to have this conversation (as they might prefer to talk to candidates actually in Clearing). If you decide to click "Decline my place" such that this is you, and to get a Clearing ID, be very aware it's a risk. You might not end up with a Clearing choice you're happy with, and then you'll be a little stuck.

thank you so much you were really helpful i appreciate this a lot!
Note: most universities won’t ask for your clearing ID. We can’t easily search for an applicant on UCAS systems with a clearing ID. To search for your application and see all your details we need your UCAS ID (the 10 digit number).

If you aren’t in clearing then universities can’t access your application to verify your qualifications or details (unless they were one of your original 5 choices). So if you’re asking a university for clearing offers it’s important that you are 100% clear and accurate with them about your qualifications and information. If there’s any mismatch because someone on the phone misheard a grade or qualification type then they can reject you.
Hi, I was one grade below my firm choice offer and my application has been unsuccessful is it worth calling the University to reconsider? I have chatted to someone via the University chat who responded that the department has made a decision

Could I apply to clearing to a University I had an offer for and I meet the requirements

How many marks below the grade boundary were you? Is it worth a Review of Marking? If so, that that would be worth contacting the uni about and letting them know.

If not, then I'm afraid as the person on the live chat said, "the department has made a decision". :frown:

Personally, I think that's too far away to be worth a Review of Marking, but stranger things have happened.

Remember that the university knows your grades not your marks, so if they have any spaces left on the course, they might be prepared to accept you if they learn that you were only 6 marks away. But if they've already filled the course, then that won't make any difference, I'm afraid. :frown:
