Why am I fascinated by cultural icons?

I realised the other week that I’m fascinated by massive cultural icons- it started when I was a child- started with Elvis Presley and I really got into his music and the 1950s- then jazz and eventually I’d say I found Amy Winehouse’s work cool, I have a poster and all of her vinyls. I love David Bowie too. Have a poster and a collection of his greatest hits album. I listen to music 24/7 and in interested in all the back stories behind the songs/ I love art too so naturally like learning about album cover art.

I listen to less culturally significant musicians too.

I’m going into photography at uni and want to photograph people/ fashion.

Is it strange to be so fascinated by these people? I know other people have one major idol, I’d say Amy winehouse is my idol. The others i listed i love their work.

I watched a recent doc on Netflix called the circle in a square about album cover art bu hypgnosis and their creation of album art- it made me realise I would love to do work like that.

But yeah any thoughts

I can’t give you any thoughts or explanations why. But what I can say is I feel I’m totally the same. I have a fascination for Marilyn Monroe since I was a child, I’d constantly print out pictures of her and stick them all over my room, I feel like I know everything about her, I absolutely love what a style icon and cultural icon she was/is to this day. I also love Amy Winehouse too, I have all her vinyls and adore her, I get really emotional when watching videos of her as I really feel she shouldn’t of died when she did, she was truly a once in a generation talent. I understand where you’re coming from, I don’t think it’s strange to be so fascinated by icons such as Amy, I listen to her music on a daily basis and it just captures your attention, she was an absolute powerhouse I think why people gravitate to people like Amy is because she was so individual, there will never be another Amy Winehouse. She sung from her heart, and from a place of pain when she was with Blake, and it shows in her music, it is truly captivating. I personally love Lady Gaga for her individuality, I feel like icons such as Amy, and Elvis she has an individuality that sets her apart from other artists, and like Amy she has a captivating powerful voice to match. These people stick out from the crowd and captivate us like no other, as there will be no other artists like them.
