CPR application. How to apply and how many years?

Hi,

I was an undergrad 2010-2013 at Oxford. I suspended my studies in my final year, but suffered from, and was treated for, severe depression during all 3 years and afterwards.

My questions are:

1. How do I apply for CPR? I have the cover letter and all the evidence ready. Do I post the cover letter and upload the evidence or can I upload both?

2.At first glance, it seems I need to have an acceptance or application for a university in order to request further funding due to CPR. Please explain the process if I don't have a current university application. I'm hoping to have the funding confirmed before I apply.

3. Will I only get 1 year extra funding at the most? My illness affected me throughout all 3 years and I can prove this.

Thanks for your help.
Hi Refusetolose,

You can upload both the cover letter and supporting evidence through your online account. It will be around 29 working days to process this evidence based on current timescales. You do need to have an application with SFE before we can process CPR evidence - you can make an application before you have been accepted on a course, this can always be cancelled at a later date. There is no limit to how many years you can claim for.

Thanks,
Calum

Great Calum, thanks for the advice. You are far clearer than the SFE online chat. They told me I'd be able to add the evidence to my old (2010!) application. Despite the site having a button for pre-2018 applications it, perhaps unsurprisingly, no longer appears.

I've created a new rough application, with both a uni and course I'm interested in but not necessarily going to apply to and attached the evidence there.

Finally, from the advice I received from the chat assistant I can only apply for extra CPR funding for the years I was suspended for illness. That would then be just the one year, right? I was ill throughout the whole time, and have evidenced this, but only suspended once (and never returned).
Hi Refusetolose,

You don't necessarily need to have been suspended from the course but it needs to apply to years that you did not progress from. I take it you repeated 1st year for 3 years and did not progress?

Thanks,
Calum

Hi Calum,

No I proceeded through 1st and second year as normal, whilst receiving treatment. Whilst I still did all the work I was certainly both unhappy and ill. Only towards the end of my final year did I suspend.

Perhaps irrelevant, but Oxford is unusual in that only the exams taken in the final few weeks of the 3 or 4 year degree count towards the final grade, so I have no 'banked' grades or progress to potentially use at a different university.

Hi there,

What course are you looking to study now? Would it be full time or part time? Was your previous study full time?
CPR evidence is usually only used to obtain 1 additional year of finance, and as Callum advised would normally be if you had not progressed or if you had suspended.

The assessor would need to review your evidence so best to send the CPR evidence and details covering letter and the team can review this for you. The evidence, would be a letter on headed paper signed/stamped and dated from someone in profession i.e. Doctor/lecturer who knows the CPR. They must know how it affected your studies and the dates it affected you. Once received it will be up to the assessor if this will be accepted or not.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire,

I'm looking at Computer Science, full-time. Previous course was PPE, full-time, so a totally different subject.

I did suspend (final year) and so did not progress, in the sense that I never returned and so was never awarded a degree.

I've sent ten pages of contemporary NHS/Doctors notes. a summary of my health problems by my current doctor (including my time at university) and a letter from my former college's Senior Tutor, who was also a Professor that taught me. All signed. Quite comprehensive, I think, but I've also offered to send more if desired.

I have attached all to my 'rough' application alongside a Covering Letter and an index of the evidence.
Hi Refusetolose,

Based on what you have said you would only be eligible to apply for CPR for one previous study as you only suspended in your final year and progressed from your other years. If you are now looking to study a degree in Computer Science ,and if CPR is awarded, you would have to self fund the 1st year of your new course based on the previous study calculation.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi Calum,

Thanks for the info.

Two final questions, I take it that applies to both tuition fees and maintenance loan (so no funding at all for first year)? Well it will be a challenge, but I'm game.

Also, given I'm now well over 25, will the means tested funding (in my potential 2nd and 3rd years) be solely from my income at that point, which will likely be zero? If so, that means I'll get maximum funding/grant.
Hi Refusetolose,

This will only apply to your tuition fee loan so you will still be eligible for a maintenance loan. Yes, if you are over 25 we will base your income assessed maintenance loan on your partner's income, if you are single you should be eligible for the maximum loan.

Thanks,
Calum

Hi,

Not as bad as I thought, then. Thanks for your advice.
