The Student Room Group

is it worth still calling unis when they’re not in clearing?

i’m thinking of declining my insurance if i don’t get into my firm, and if i’m thinking of doing that there should be plenty of students across the country thinking of doing the same thing no? so if a few students were to decline a certain course, would the uni bother entering in clearing or if you just called them up would they just let you in? im just quite curious as to see if unis would enter if only 2 or 3 students declined. would unis be updating their website on the day as well?
Unis will update their website tomorrow, and going forward until courses are full. Some might not advertise if the course has a handful of places as it might be a popular course for people to transfer to. If that is the case, you would need to contact them directly and ask but there is no guarantee with anything in clearing and each uni does things slightly differently.

You would be at risk of having no place for September if you decline any offers you get but it's a calculated risk you need to weigh up yourself once you know your final grades tomorrow.
Unis anticipate all of these sort of movements and have complicated algorithms based on previous years activity to base their decisions on. Its therefore exceedingly unlikely that any Uni would miscalculate to the extent where they suddenly realise that they have Clearing places.

Check Uni websites tonight after about 6pm for latest updates, and of course, you can still phone if they have no declared vacancies but be prepared for a flat No - and by the time you have done that, places at other Unis will have been taken. Remember, popular Unis will 'sell-out' within a couple of hours .

i really liked the look of liverpool and newcastle until they both took themselves out of clearing. my only choice now is northumbria, i want to stay close and i live in the east midlands but i wanted a decent nightlife so places like derby and lincoln are a bit out of reach for me. i just feel super picky haha but i just wanna make the right choice as i’m gonna be there for the next 3/4 years

Hi, as others have said I think you need to wait for the morning to see what else is available for the full picture.

Liverpool and Newcastle are both quite a long way from the East Midlands. There are quite a lot of other cities that are also just as near or nearer what is it that draws you to those two?

Also can I ask what your firm is?

Hi Tianna, I'm a BBC producer this evening we're doing a live Q & A about clearing, results etc for the Reliable Sauce podcast it will be a live TikTok/iPlayer and I wondered if you'd be up for asking your question live on the programme to our Education Correspondent and team Kirsty Grant and Jordan kennedy. If so let me know it would be sometime between 7.30 - 8pm?

hiii, id be happy to join the live i think that’d be quite cool. would i have to join the live myself or input the question?
Folks - please be very wary of anyone asking for private info such as your email address - this is for your own safety.
First of all just because a uni hasn't advertised a vacancy doesn't mean they don't have free spaces, you could ring and get lucky. However, it's a very risky (and potentially very time-consuming) strategy. I wouldn't rely on doing this, and I certainly wouldn't turn down existing offers based on this.

If you have 1 or 2 real favourites, there's no harm in calling them on the day. I would do that alongside calling other unis that do advertise Law (there will be spaces, look at the UCAS clearing search).

You may not find the perfect uni or course but there will be options available for you.

i guess it’s quite risky, do u think if i called my first choice clearing and then after call the other unis? also liverpool and newcastle seem like really cool courses and are in a big city which i love (plus my dads a newcastle united supported so i’m a bit biased there hahah)

Just be aware that Clearing applicants are normally at the back of the queue for Uni accommodation - that can mean either just being offered the mega-expensive stuff or the rubbish, or sometimes, nothing at all.

every university i’ve been looking at gives guaranteed first year accommodation, ive deffo looked at that because i don’t want to be left booking private accoms. i don’t mind taking the expensive stuff as my parents will be paying for everything and i’ve explained the risk of accommodation. i really hope i get some decent stuff though

Guaranteed first year accommodation often has a deadline to apply for accommodation by July/1August for the guarantee to apply.
It won’t automatically carry over to clearing applicants
