English Language & Literature at Uni

Does anyone have any advice for someone looking into studying English language and lit at uni in 2025?
I have done quite a bit of research and am looking into places such as Lancaster, Sheffield, Leeds, Reading, Oxford, Manchester, Cardiff etc
Just wondering if there any tips people can give before I apply/ write my personal statement
Thanks! <3

Hi! I'm Jess, a recent English Literature graduate at Lancaster University. Good news is you have plenty of time to research and decide your options. My main advice would be looking at all the university's course structures in detail, both optional and core modules, as these differ with place. To see Lancaster's structure for Language and Literature visit https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/english-language-and-literature-ba-hons-q302/2025/#literature-in-time--continuity-and-change-year-1-core-modules-1

I would also suggest really thinking about what interests you have more than anything - Lancaster's first year Literature module ranges from medieval literature up to the 21st century, but most of our module choices after this span from 1700s-1900s. Focus on your interests this year and this will help you also write your personal statement when applying to a university.

Finally, while course structure is important, the actual place and feel of the university is also crucial when making your choice. If you are able, I would suggest attending open days, as they give you a clear insight into how the city/campus feels and if they are the right pick for you.

I hope this helps! Good luck with the rest of your research, and if you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask!
