Results day 2024 advice needed

My results day is today and I did not do well in exams and have a strong feeling I’m not gonna be happy with grades and I have been considering the possibility of resitting also another reason for this is that I don’t really fully know what to do at uni like I picked psychology but I’m not 100% sure and I cannot take a gap year as my parents won’t let me so I thought through a resit I could take time to figure it out . Everyone is going to uni and I feel like the only who’s considering resits even though I could get a place in uni either through clearing or insurance but I just don’t know yet . Some advice would be much appreciated, thanks .

Hello there :wavey:

How you're feeling is so natural - you're not sure how today is going to go and figure out all the options.

The fact is - you will have options and we're here to support you.

Lots of universities are in Clearing with competitive grade offers. Have you taken a look via UCAS

It sounds like you are unsure about psychology - what did you study at A-level and did you like it? Is there any other subject you're curious about?

Hi, it's such a nervous feeling on results day.

Maybe think about what you enjoyed best at A Levels and if you can see a career in that.

And remember, lots of people end up in careers quite different from the area they studied, so don't feel restricted. Lots of degrees can also lead to many different areas of work.

You may also be able to change courses if you find you don't enjoy the subject you choose.

Maybe when you get your results you can talk with your parents about how you're feeling. On a practical and emotional level, it may be better to wait a year to really figure out what you want to do and there are so many useful, productive and fulfilling things you can do with a gap year.

I took a gap year to work out what I wanted to do, and I think my parents were grateful because when I did go to uni, they knew they were spending money on something I'd enjoy and get the most from.

Best of luck for today. I really hope it works out.

You got this!! As others have said though, don't worry if you don't have things figured out. I studied sport at college, then went onto sports psychology, then tourism, then marketing and now customer service so don't feel like you need to stick to one area!

If you are unsure, you can always give universities a call to discuss your options, I'm sure they would be happy to help talk through how they, and others can help support your journey!

It might seem like a long way away, but do you have any careers in mind for after uni?

Results day can be really challenging - I know how stressed I was in the lead-up and on the day picking up my results. I wanted to plan for all the options that could happen. It is good that you're already thinking about the different options available to you if you don't do as well as you would have liked. Ultimately you have to do what is right for you, even if that feels different to your friends.

On Student Space, we have a couple of resources which might help you right now:

You don't have to navigate this on your own.

If it does not work out it may feel like the end of the world right now, but it will all work out in the end. Good luck - we will be thinking of you - Grace 🧡

Good morning @Inx_83828 🤗

I just wanted to check in and see how you were feeling today? How are you feeling about your results?

Please let us know if you need any advice on anything, or whether you have contacted any universities to speak about your options yet.

Best of luck!

Becky

Hi there,

How are you feeling now that you have your results?

When considering what to do at university, think about what you enjoyed studying at A-Levels. Could you see yourself taking this as a degree subject? Is there something you are interested in that you do in your time outside of school that you could pursue? Keep in mind the career prospects associated with this, but also remember that so many people don't actually directly use their degree, and will often go into a different career direction!

Something else to remember is that everyone is on their own path. Your friends might be doing something different, but that doesn't mean it is right for you. Some people go to university immediately, and some join a few years later. There is nothing wrong with that, and everyone has to make the choice that is right for them!

Best of luck and I hope this helps,

Hi there!

I hope your results went okay today.

Choosing what to do at university and where to do it can be a really difficult choice so try not to worry too much!

If you feeling like resitting would give you some time to have a look over everything then I would do this instead of rushing into any decisions today! You've also got a few weeks of clearing yet so if you change your mind, you could always ring around different universities and see if they have the course you want still !

I hope this helps,

Rebecca, UCLan
