Urgent question

I got into my firm uni however they out me on a foundation year due to having significantly worse grades than expected should I try and apply for the main course or stick with the foundation
I'd suggest sticking with what you've been offered. There's no shame in doing a foundation year. It'll put you in a better position to succeed when you progress into Year 1 of your degree.

As someone who did a foundation year, I can say it was actually beneficial to myself!

Where I moved to Bristol (I'm from a little *hithole West of London), I was in a completely new city and didn't know anyone. I was able to get learn my way around a new city, adjust to the university rules and regulations (and learn them in a less stressful environment) and meet new people in societies. You will also be getting used to a new IT system.

It's up to you but foundation year is not as bad as it sounds. I don't know the course you're taking (I am just finishing my Biomedical Science MSc after 4 years of working in the NHS after graduating from my BSc) but I can say foundation year was quite helpful to me!

If you have been offered an alternative course offer (eg. the same course with foundation year) then unfortunately your firm has already decided they are unable to take you for the main course.
You would however be able to apply for the main course at other universities through clearing if you wish.
A foundation course has plenty of pros and cons, it gives you a year to ramp up the difficulty before the main degree and if you're moving out then a year to get used to that also. It can be a really solid platform to start the main degree from which can be reassuring if you got disappointing a level results. That said, there are obviously financial implications of that decision, if your parents were going to have to support you financially during your degree then you should check they are happy and able to support you for an additional year.
If you're not sure, perhaps you could have a look at what unis have clearing open for the main course with your grades and see if you fancy any of them in particular?

Hey @Rayraytoure 👋

It's great to hear that you have got a place at your firm university. What course are you planning on studying?

There's no harm in doing a foundation year - it will introduce you to some of the concepts that you will be covering in your course and will allow you to get a feel for the university. So many foundation-year students go on to obtain fantastic results in university, so there is no shame in doing a foundation year at all.

Your other option is seeking another university through clearing that offers slightly lower entry requirements, but if your heart was set on your firm university, I'd say go for the foundation year!

The uni won't change you to the full course sadly as they would of already considered this before giving you the offer. Have you looked at other unis to see if you can release yourself and go there? Make sure you get an offer before realising yourself if you do go this way though!

Then what are some advantages and disadvantages to doing a foundation degree?

Then would there be any point in applying for clearing in a Russel group uni?

If they have places available, and you meet the grades, then there is no reason why not! 🙂

Go with the Foundation - they want you, you have accomm etc organised, and 'with Foundation' will not appear on your degree certificate/

Hi @Rayraytoure

Congratulations on your offer!

Foundation years are really helpful and introduce core concepts before going straight into the content. You may find that it's actually beneficial even though it wasn't in your original plans. Look into the modules that are included by checking the university website or giving them a call so you can decide if it's for you or not.

Good Luck,

Hey @Rayraytoure,

Everyone I know who completed a Foundation Year really enjoyed it: it was a great opportunity to settle into university life and a new academic structure, and gave them an additional year to get to know people and join societies. If your chose to firm the university that has now offered you a Foundation Year, you must have liked it to begin with - so there's no harm in simply viewing the year as a chance to spend more time in a university environment studying a subject that you're passionate about. 🙂

Nonetheless, if the main course is currently in Clearing, you can always try to call the university on their Clearing line and discuss it with a member of staff. But a Foundation Year is definitely worthwhile if it's a route you'd consider pursuing.

Hope this was helpful!
