Can I defer an offer for next year and still apply for UCAS again?

I have an unconditional offer now that i have my results, but my predicted grades were too low to apply to the universities i really wanted to originally, i am now one grade below the requirements for the ones i didnt apply for an want to try my luck. Can i defer the place i have right now and also reapply to those universities via ucas? or do i have to reject my place to apply again.

Are the universities you wanted to apply to in Clearing? If so, you could consider declining your place to apply to them now. Alternatively, you could make a fresh application this year but that would involve losing your existing place (regardless of any deferral).
Hi Patton,

Congratulations on your results and I am sorry that they were perhaps slightly lower than you had hoped. However, I thought I would give you some reassurance on your concern! You are more than welcome to request a deferral without risking your place. You can also, "try your luck" because it could be that there are places on the course you originally applied for, you should try and ask the question! If you don't ask you don't get, as they say.
Another option for you, could be to apply through clearing to other unis. If you do decide to do this it won't impact your current offer unless they release yourself via UCAS. You can apply direct to unis through clearing, they might prefer if you have already self released as it speeds up process for accepting you, in but I would always advise to not release existing offer until you have a clearing offer you want to accept!

I really hope this helps,

Hey @Patton 👋

Firstly, congratulations on your results! Whilst you may be slightly below the entry requirements at the universities that you favour, it sounds like you did a lot better than your predicted grades and so you should be really proud of yourself.

Are the universities that you are interested in currently in clearing? If so, why not reach out to them directly and see if there is any availability on the course you're interested in despite being slightly below the entry requirements? I don't see any harm in trying, and you might regret it if you don't!

I would say to not decline your current offer until you have received a verbal offer from another university, however.

Best of luck - I hope you find the university that is right for you😀
