DEE grades, what do i do?

Didn’t get my firm (Leicester) but got my insurance somehow (keele). Unfortunately keele is sort of in the middle of nowhere and i know i’d have an awful time if i go. What should i do? Clearing doesn’t seem to be any good for these grades either.

I did however apply for a foundation year. If i go to keele for the foundation year is it possible to have a transfer to leicester for the main course? Or any other better uni for that matter?

Optimism would be much appreciated here as i’ve gone through as much pessimism as humanly possible lol.

Hello, Keele graduate here :hello:

Are you sure you'd have an awful time? :curious:
You've just admitted you're quite pessimistic

Transferring is possible, but I'm going to start by asking what course you want to study and what's the long term plan for the future? That's the important stuff right now.

We are here for you, we can do this :dumbells:

hi love,

i’m kinda sure haha, looking at the uni online through current students lenses, it doesn’t really seem like the right uni for me you know? I just have that vibe from it. No offence to you ofc if you enjoyed it, good on you!

i applied for a computer science with an integrated foundation year. If i do fantastic in that first year, is there a possibility for transfer? Considering maybe Leicester again. Some say transfers to other unis are absolutely possible whilst others say they aren’t so i don’t know what to believe lol.
If you are not happy with Keele, then talk to your school about resits.

The thing with transferring after a foundation year is that it's just not a guarantee. As the foundation year is not a standalone qualification, it's not necessarily transferable - it's basically at the whim of the unis you apply to whether they would accept the foundation year or not as meeting their requirements. Additionally, it uses up one of your (finite!) years of student finance funding - which could be a problem later if you change course or need to repeat a year (as then you'd need to pay out of pocket for the tuition fees, which is a lot of money).

Whether or not Keele is the right uni for you is completely down to you to figure out - but I would strongly recommend against starting a degree (anywhere) that you don't intend to finish. Also if you feel very strongly Keele isn't for you, why aim to go there for a year just to transfer anyway?

I think if you definitely don't want to go to Keele and there aren't any options in clearing for the unis you want to do the whole course at, you are probably best off taking a gap year, retaking, and reapplying.

That said, have you had a chance to visit the uni? Sometimes this can help you get an idea of whether you do feel it would "work" for you

Hi @unmmm

Sorry to hear that your results day didn't go to plan!

It's completely understandable to change your mind about your firm or insurance choices over the summer. It's so important to make sure you're completely set on your choice before confirming your place.

I would recommend calling universities' hotline as they may be able to chat to you about different options available that aren't on their website.

If you're not happy with those options and are open to other universities, a lot of places are offering visit/open days over the coming weeks for you to see the campus in person and get a feel of whether you could live there.

There is a lot to think about in terms of where you'd rather study and live - but there's no wrong decision. It just has to be right for you!

I hope this helps 😊

Not a problem, as a uni it isn't to everybody's tastes.
artful_lounger has really sensible advice about not starting on a course you know you won't finish - especially at a uni you don't think you'll enjoy

Have you looked at what's available in clearing?

hi there!

Thanks a lot for the advice, much appreciated. I understand transfers aren’t a standalone qualification, but if theres a possibility of me being able to have a transfer after just the 1yr foundation, then i’d much rather take it over a year13 redo, 1. purely considering the impact either option may have on my personal mental health and 2. the fact that if i did a redo, id still have to enroll into a foundation regardless. (Don’t really wanna do 5 years for uni lol)

I would like to know if this is a true possibility as like i said, im seeing mixed views here online. How can i get in contact with Leicester to discuss this? Their website is rather vague about it and the lady i was put to on their hotline was also vague saying yes it is possible but i’m not sure if she was talking in the context of Leicester or not. Would other grades also still matter with a transfer?

Id want to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation where they’ve successfully switched after foundation, or even leicester themselves would be great as i’ve seen them on some forums a few times! I’m willing to put all the work in to get top grades for a transfer.

Nothing i could get better on clearing unless it was a worse course/uni unfortunately. Id be totally fine starting at a uni i won’t finish as long as i can transfer to one i will finish at i guess. I just need to see if this is possible. Either way i think i’m going down the keele route regardless. Honestly will say i’m still feeling very heartbroken atm about my firm but life must go on! Im responsible for putting myself in this position so i’m determined to find a way out of it!

Those feelings are totally normal, it's a tough day regardless :hugs:
What course do you want to study?
Do you have particular industries in mind for a career further down the line? Vast majority of employers do not consider uni institution to be an important factor when employing people.

It's probably best to email the main admissions people but it's a bit tricky as it's the middle of clearing so you're unlikely to get a response that isn't specific to clearing this year now anytime soon I would guess.

It is in principle possible (I ended up going to a different uni after doing a foundation year and the first year of a different course at one uni - although it was a mistake in retrospect), but there's simply no guarantee. They may also care about your school leaving grades too (you have to declare these regardless).

This is the issue with the concept of applying elsewhere after a foundation year - there just isn't any clear answer and universities have no obligation to accept or consider a foundation year (nor any incentive to give any clearer guidance on it really). Whereas with A-level resits you know exactly what you're getting.

It's also possible you could complete the foundation year at one uni then when you reapply to another, they make you do their foundation year anyway.
