Grade C D E in AS ( year 12)

I need help, I did so bad in my year 12 exams. I just got my results back and I wanted to cry
I got C in philosophy ( 1 mark off a B, tryna get it remarked)
D in Art, I thought I was found to get a C
And an E in maths

I need roughly BBB for my unis that I want to apply to. How will this affect my predicted grades??

I’m so nervous and scared. What if I don’t get into the places I want to.

Since I’ve came back all I’ve done was cry and think.

Should I retake the year??? I’m planning on doing more work on my subects during summer to prepare myself and up my grades but I don’t know what to do

I’m so defeated. I feel so useless. I should have tried harder. Everyone got better grades that me. What do I do? I’m just so tired. I wish time could go back and I could try again

I don’t really wanna retake the year but if I have to….. idk man. I’ve just been crying since I got back.

I need advice please. Anything

Retake the year. However, do things properly this time.

I can give pointers for Maths, but for the other subjects you would need to speak to other people. At best I can only give you links to tips offered by people who achieved high grades, if there are any.

If you are not allowed to resit art, then I would pick a different A Level subject and try to do it all in one year (privately if you need to).

Hey @Vikeze, I just wanted to check in with you. I'm sorry to hear you're feeling really disappointed. Please remember your grades don't define your worth or your future. You did what you could at the time, it's not worth regretting how you went about things, it'll only add to the stress, what's commendable is how you're looking forward now and saying you will put in more work and could up your grades! 🙂 You've totally got this if you decide to retake the year, I think this will encourage you to work even harder, try new revision techniques, it'll help keep you motivated!

Are you able to go speak with your family or friends right now so they can be a shoulder to cry on? Take some time out, go for a walk and clear your head, speak with your teachers as well so you can explore your options. You have so many options open to you, don't worry, this does not define anything.

Please keep us updated with what you decide to do, please take some time to yourself and take care of your mental health and wellbeing at this time. We're all here to support you and offer any advice we can, so if you need someone to talk to please do reach out!

Hey @Vikeze 👋

Are you feeling any better? I know everything must feel so overwhelming right now, but please remember that you are not alone, and that there are so many options available for you.

You should be really proud of the results you have obtained. While they are not what you expected, you still passed them all. Transitioning from GCSEs to AS levels is challenging - the workload is so much more, and so give yourself some praise for how well you have handled that transition.

What are you thinking of studying in university? This could determine whether it would be a good choice to retake your exams or not. Retaking all of your exams could be challenging though, and may add to your stress as you will have to manage even more revision and exams.

Remember that you still have another year of A-levels - now is your time to really push. Focus on your goals, and try out new revision techniques. You can always turn to your tutors for revision support, and/or speak to someone that you know who performed well and ask what works for them.

In terms of universities, remember that you can always do a foundation year if needs be too!

Your next step right now should be taking some time for yourself. Relax, connect with family and friends, and do things that you enjoy. Your grades do not, and will not ever, reflect your worth. You have done really well to get to this stage of your academic journey, and although you are disappointed with your grades, you've still done great.

I hope you start to feel a bit better soon. Believe in yourself. Feel free to reach out if you need any additional advice or support - we're here to help.

You can technically redo art but your gonna have to start again, I mean redoing is an option that I don’t want to take but if I have too I will 💔 I won’t want to fail again.
I think that’s for the best… sigh

Technically, art and design A Level isn't really a required subject. If you wanted to, you can pick any other subject and still be eligible for most of the degrees or courses that you want to do later (it's definitely not a required subject for any career or professional qualification that I know of).

Unless your heart is specifically set on a degree course that you absolutely love and would do anything to get into that does require Art and Design A Level, I think you can more or less set this aside. Do check the entry requirements of the course that you want to do to be absolutely sure though.

I'm so glad to hear you had a good chat with them and that they offered you some helpful advice. Are you feeling any better now you've spoken to them? What are your plans for the rest of the day? I hope you take some time out for yourself, get out in nature and get some fresh air, speak/or go see some loved ones who can be your support system right now. Really glad you're putting your mental health and wellbeing first and contacted someone who helped, it's a really brave thing to do to speak out about how you're really feeling 🙂

Have you managed to speak to your teachers about your options as well? It's amazing to hear you want to study computer animation, that sounds like such a fun course! Have you always had an interest in it? I chose to study media at uni because I loved doing it at GCSE and A-Level, I didn't really know what I wanted to do in the future, but I loved being behind a camera and I loved film and TV. 😀

If you do decide to retake the year, then you can always ask for some new revision techniques to try and advice and tips on the student room, everyone's always happy to help on site, so hopefully we can all help you feel a bit better about retaking if that's what you end up doing.

Best of luck with everything!

Art is required for my course. I need a portfolio of work. Art helps a lot. Plus I do like the subject .
I’m doing animation and all places need a portfolio

Hi @Vikeze 👋

Do whatever you think is right - trust your gut. If you think that you could perform better this time around and have the mental ability to do it, go for it.

If not, just try to push yourself harder this year and develop some better study techniques.

With your grades, there are still plentiful university options, and a foundation year is always a possibility if not.

Try not to be too disheartened - what's meant to be will be. Take some time to do things that you enjoy for a few days, and come back to this when you feel more level-headed.

We are always here if you need any advice or support going forward. I'd love to hear what you decide to do.

My plans for the rest of the day is just to detoxify and do my hair.
I think the biggest drawback from redo year 12 is my pride. I won’t want people to look at my funny or make nasty comments about me
I didn’t fail but I didn’t do good. I don’t want my whole year to be ahead of me and im behind. I think that’s it but I think it’s best for me. I really do need to retake. I won’t change subjects but need to solidify year 1 properly
I’m going to speak to my teacher first day back tho. Rn all im doing now is thinking

Yeah definitely take some time out for yourself today, eat some good food, maybe watch a new show or do something you love, get a good nights sleep as well so you can think clearly tomorrow as well. I doubt anyone would ever make nasty comments, and if they ever did then that says more about them than you, there's nothing wrong with retaking the year at all! It's going to get you where you want to be. This is just the next step in your journey. You'll get exactly where you want to be soon. Best of luck with everything

Hi @Vikeze

I'm sorry to hear you are disappoint with your grades. Although it doesn't feel like it right now, you will look back on this moment and realise your grades do not define you at all. I see you have had some excellent advice already.

I would recommend stepping away from it all for now and revisiting the situation in a couple days. I would recommend checking out the grade requirements/ tariff points required for you to get into your chosen university degree, also look at alternative courses too. If your far off your goal, then it may be appropriate to redo the year and take a different approach to your studying. If your current grades are only slightly off what is needed, then continuing your current path may be right.

Also remember university isn't the only next step in life, there is so many alternatives. I know many successful people who haven't got a degree.

I hope you are doing well, please feel free to message me any questions,
-Sophia (Business and Management)
