Is a degree worth “it” & will it financially pay off, so much depends on what you want to do with your life, and what you do at university
•
All degrees are not equal but they cost the same (you get signed up to a grad tax - it is a financial burden)
•
If you go to university, have a plan for potential careers & make it worth it, this means going beyond simply getting a 2.1 and use the resources outside of your formal academics to invest in skills & experiences employers will want
•
There are courses of frankly very minimal employability benefit, especially if all you leave with is the degree
•
The grad tax is an aspirational tax & it is significant. Unfortunately if you earn over £50k you will pretty much be paying half your next pound (over this threshold) back to the government (between the “repayment” tax & income tax, 40% income + 9% student loan repayment)
•
The grad tax is worth it, if it opens up an industry/career you want to do that would not be possible without university. However I would strongly consider degree apprenticeships if they open the doors you want nowadays
•
The grad tax comes with a level of “insurance“ as you only re-pay the 9% of your salary over a certain threshold, if you don’t become a “high earner” & if you earn the median UK wage your repayments are not that significant
•
I hope the government revisit financing higher education in the future as it can be a special experience, learning & education is very powerful but I think the model needs to be changed so university is cheaper, we send less people to university but promote affordable alternatives & university places on the “elite” /hyper competitive courses are accessible to every home student regardless of resources & background in a meritocratic way
